Chiefs' Rally Comes Up Short in 3-2 Setback

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs rallied back from a two-run deficit in the ninth inning, but left the bases loaded in the final frame and fell to the Quad Cities River Bandits 3-2 on Wednesday night. The Chiefs went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left 12 runners on base including three in the ninth. Peoria falls to 20-19 on the season and 11-7 at home.

The Chiefs had the first opportunity to break a scoreless tie in the bottom half of the second. With one down, Sergio Burruel singled into center field before Smaily Borges struck out swinging. Kyung-Min Na drove a base hit into center that was misplayed by Bandits' centerfielder Virgil Hill, but Burruel was thrown out at the plate by Quad Cities' shortstop Chris Edmondson as he gambled for home.

Peoria scored the first run of the game with a two-out rally in the fourth inning. Anthony Giansanti kept his hit streak alive with a single into left field and traveled to third when Sergio Burruel knocked a base hit into center. With runners on the corners, Borges gave Peoria a 1-0 lead with a RBI double down the left field line against River Bandits' starter Kevin Siegrist.

Quad Cities quickly responded in the fifth inning with a solo shot off Peoria reliever Robinson Lopez. Edmondson led off with a home run over the right field wall and into the Pepsi Picnic Plaza to even the game at 1-1. With two outs, Quad Cities threatened again as Greg Garcia singled and Romulo Ruiz walked, but Lopez got out of the jam.

The River Bandits' took their first lead of the game with another solo shot in the sixth. Peoria got two quick outs to begin the inning, but Jonathan Rodriguez belted his fifth long ball of the season over the left field wall for a 2-1 advantage.

Another one-run stanza in the seventh increased Quad Cities' lead to 3-1. Hill began the inning with a double to left and advanced to third on a bunt single by Garcia. With nobody out, Ruiz lifted a sacrifice fly to deep left field that allowed Hill to tag up and score.

The Chiefs attempted a late rally in the bottom of the ninth off Bandits' relievers Hector Corpas and Justin Wright. With one out, Na walked before Pierre LePage and Elliot Soto singled to load the bases against Corpas. With no room on the bases, Corpas walked Rohan to force home a run to make the game 3-2. Wright came into the game with one out and the bags still loaded, but got Richard Jones and Ryan Cuneo to groundout to end the game and earn his second save of the year.

Dallas Beeler started and allowed just one hit, no runs and no walks in four innings of work. He also struck out four batters in the no decision. Lopez (3-1) gave up three runs, all earned, on eight hits in four innings of relief work. He also walked one batter and struck out four. Yohan Gonzalez pitched the final inning and allowed one hit and no runs. He did not allow a walk or record a strikeout in the appearance.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Sergio Burruel (C) - Burruel went 3-for-4 to lead the Chiefs' offense. All three of his hits were singles in the contest and all came against left-handed pitching.
