May 18, 2011 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Daniel Corcino struck out 11 batters over six near-perfect innings to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 7-1 victory over the Great Lakes Loons in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday. The Loons came back to win the nightcap 4-2 and gain a split before a crowd of 8,019 at Fifth Third Field.
Corcino (6-2) allowed only a first inning double to Christian Lara over his six innings to win his sixth straight start. At one point, Corcino struck out eight consecutive Loons batters.
The Dragons took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Billy Hamilton singled on the first pitch of the inning, stole second, and eventually scored on Dominic D'Anna's single to right. David Vidal followed with a long home run to left, his fourth of the season, to give Dayton a three-run lead.
In the sixth, the Dragons added four more runs. Juan Duran drilled a three-run home run that landed on the roof of the concessions building beyond the left field fence. It was Duran's fourth homer of the year. Great Lakes scored their only run in the seventh inning to close out the scoring.
In the second game, Great Lakes' Bryant Hernandez hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning as the Loons built a 4-1 lead against Dragons starting pitcher Daniel Tuttle (3-1).
Dayton's Jaren Matthews belted a solo home run in the sixth, his fourth of the season, to make it 4-2, but the Dragons could not collect a hit the rest of the night.
Tuttle suffered the loss, allowing six hits and four earned runs in six innings with one walk and three strikeouts.
Over the two games, Hamilton stole five bases in six attempts for the Dragons, bringing his total for the year to 29. Hamilton leads all of professional baseball in stolen bases.
Dayton (20-19) will host Great Lakes (24-15) in the series finale on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Tanner Robles (2-3, 5.40) will start for Dayton. The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2. Former Reds infielder and former Dragons manager Todd Benzinger will provide commentary.
