Arbelo's Homers Not Enough for Hawks

May 18, 2011 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - Yazy Arbelo's two home runs and three RBIs were not enough for the South Bend Silver Hawks on Wednesday as the team fell to the Lansing Lugnuts 5-3 on the first School Day at the Cove of the season. The two teams have split the first two games of the series setting up a decisive game three on Thursday.

Trailing 3-0, Arbelo got the Silver Hawks on the board in the bottom of the fourth when he launched a two run home run to right field against Lansing starter Sean Nolin (ND). Arbelo tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot to almost the same spot in right against reliever Danny Barnes (WP, 3-0).

Entering Tuesday, Arbelo had a three homer lead over the nearest competitor in the Midwest League. The gap has widened after the first multi-homer game for a Silver Hawk this season. Arbelo also increased his league-leading RBI total to 35, four higher than the next closest Midwest Leaguer.

After the Hawks tied the game in the seventh, Lansing took the lead for good against Mike Bolsinger (LP, 2-1) in the eighth. Jake Marisnick singled, stole second, and scored on a Lance Durham double. Durham moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI single from Oliver Dominguez to put the lead at 5-3.

Lansing scored early runs against South Ben starter Jeff Shields (ND), who battled his way through 5.0 innings. Shields allowed three runs on three hits with five strikeouts in his time on the mound. The first run he allowed scored on a fielder's choice/error combo with the second run coming home on a wild pitch. Lansing made it a 3-0 game with a RBI groundout from Jack Murphy in the top of the fourth.

Nolin allowed only three hits as well in the starting role for Lansing, striking out seven. Steve Turnbull (SV, 10) closed it out in the ninth, remaining perfect in converting save opportunities this season.

Mike Freeman scored on Arbelo's first homer after hitting a leadoff single, extending his hitting streak to six games. Freeman's current streak ties both his and the team's longest this season.

The brief series wraps up on Thursday evening with a 6:30 PM Eastern Time first pitch at Coveleski Stadium. South Bend will start LHP Patrick Schuster (1-2, 4.43 ERA) against Lansing's RHP Drew Hutchison (1-1, 3.38 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:10 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
