Checkers Trade Darling To Nailers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Head coach and general manager of the Charlotte Checkers, Derek Wilkinson, announced today that the team has traded goaltender, Curtis Darling to the Wheeling Nailers in exchange for future considerations. Also, defenseman Kenny Smith has returned on loan from the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League.

Darling, 6-foot-2, 185 pounds, hails from Calgary, Alberta. He dressed in eight games for the Checkers compiling a record of three wins and four losses. He recorded a 2.94 goals against average and a .881 save percentage with one shutout. During his stint with the Checkers, he was loaned to the Syracuse Crunch (AHL) where he played in 15 minutes of one game stopping all four shots he faced.

Smith, 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, has played in 22 games for the Checkers this season gathering one goal, three assists totaling four points with 38 penalty minutes. In two stints with the Bruins this year, he has suited up in eight games but hasn't registered a point. Smith is a Stoneham, MA. native and was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the third round of the 2001 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

The Checkers began their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on Jan. 10 against the Pensacola Ice Pilots. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date.
