
RoadRunners Sink Steelheads 3-1

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Thatcher Bell tallied a goal and added an assist and goalie Dave McKee made 34 saves to lift the Phoenix RoadRunners to a 3-1 win over the Idaho Steelheads before 2,682 at US Airways Center in ECHL action Wednesday.
Following a scoreless first period, the RoadRunners (11-15-5) struck first when Thatcher Bell found Sean O'Connor with a pass in front of the net, and O'Connor snapped the puck by Idaho goalie Steve Silverthorn at 3:43 of the second for a 1-0 lead.
Ryan Walsh gave Phoenix a 2-0 cushion 4:52 into the third period when he collected Gino Guyer's rebound in the slot and tapped it into the net. The Steelheads (15-11-7) would respond less than two minutes later on the power play as Lance Galbraith beat McKee with a slap shot to the upper right corner of the net at 6:51. The RoadRunners however would have the game's last say as Thatcher Bell whipped a shot from the right-wing circle through the pads of Silverthorn at 11:39 of the third to account for the final score.
Idaho out-shot Phoenix 35-32. McKee stopped 34 shots to improve to 3-4-2 on the season. The RoadRunners went 0-3 on the power play while Idaho was 1-5 with the man-advantage.
Notes: The RoadRunners victory was their first in six tries this season against Idaho. Phoenix is now 1-4-1 against the Steelheads this year and 6-15-2 lifetime...Defenseman and Captain Reagan Rome was activated from the three-day injured reserve prior to the game. Rome made his first appearance in the line-up in nine games and assisted on Bell's goal...Rookie forward Chris Stevens was placed on the three-day injured reserve...The RoadRunners are now 7-0-3 when leading after two periods.
Phoenix opens a season-long 12-game road trip at 9:15 p.m. Friday with the opener of a two-game series against the Alaska Aces from Sullivan Arena in Anchorage. Catch all the action live on Independent 1310 KXAM beginning with "RoadRunners Countdown" at 9:00 p.m.
The RoadRunners return to US Airways Center at 7:11 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30 when the open a five-game home-stand with the Las Vegas Wranglers.
