Trenton Devils News Release
PENSACOLA, FL (January 2, 2008) - The Devils saw two of their top five goal scorers called up the AHL, but Eric Castonguay proved that Trenton still has plenty of firepower left, netting two goals as the Devils defeated Pensacola 3-1.
Castonguay increased his team lead in goals scored by notching the 13th and 14th tallies of his season.
His first goal came with eight minutes elapsed in the second, when, holding tight at the far goal line, he received a feed through traffic from Jim Henkel. Evading one man, the twenty year-old forward had space enough to wing a shot from the center of the slot, beating Ellsworth to the top left corner.
The young forward would finish the Devils' night with an insurance goal, taking a one-timer from Andrew Leach and tipping it past the Pensacola netminder for his third multi-point game of the year.
Matt Rogers would get his shot in the first period, when he found himself alone at the top of the blueline 17:37 in. Catching the Ice Pilots on the change, Rogers took a feed and raced in across the top dot, loosing a shot as he was collided into by a defender. The shot would not succeed, but referee Keith Kaval ruled a penalty shot was in order.
Rogers took the puck at a full sprint before slowing down as he curled around the near dot. Deking several times, he fired on the backhand through netminder Cam Ellsworth's legs, equalizing the game.
Pensacola would actually score first, on the power play, when Erik Fabian capitalized on a collapsed box in front of Jason Smith. The attacker snaked the puck through the corner for the Ice Pilots' lone goal of the night.
Jason Smith earned the win, his second in a row, saving 34 of 35 shots and staying perfect in the second and third.
The Trenton Devils fly south for the winter to take on the Pensacola Ice Pilots at the Pensacola Civic Center January 2nd at 7:05pm. Tune into WBCB 1490 or go online to www.trentondevils.com and listen or watch live courtesy of B2 Networks.
