Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Checkers rang in the 2006 with three wins in three nights; however, the Checkers dropped the final two games of the five-games-in-six-days set. Charlotte remains in third place in the South Division, seven points behind first-place Florida and five points behind second-place Gwinnett.

With just one game to play before the mid-way point of the season, the Checkers have survived a grueling first-half of the season. Charlotte has played 22-of-35 games on the road through the first 12 weeks of the season. With a record of 18-14-3, the Checkers are poised to benefit from a second-half schedule loaded with home games. The Checkers will finish the season with 23 home games and just 14 on the road.

Tuesday, January 3, 2006 @ South Carolina, W, 5-2 The Charlotte Checkers are short on numbers, beat up, and have been playing more of a baseball schedule than a hockey schedule the past month. They don't seem to mind however, as they continue to dig down deep and pull out wins. Starting with only 16 skaters Tuesday night and finishing with only 13, the Checkers pulled off a 5-2 victory over the South Carolina Stingrays in Charleston.

Mike Bayrack scored a pair of goals and added an assist, and Ryan Fultz, Dusty Jamieson and Juris Stals added single tallies in the Charlotte victory. Checkers goalie Chris Holt made 30 saves in notching his fourth win of the season, and helped Charlotte to its third win straight. The Checkers have also beaten the Stingrays in all six meetings this season.

Wednesday, January 4, 2006 vs. Columbia, W, 5-2 Dusty Jamieson's hat trick led the Charlotte Checkers to a 5-2 win against the Columbia Inferno Wednesday night in front of 3,780 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Jamieson was named the First Star of the game scoring a goal in each period including the first and last goals of the game.

Checkers goalie Jeff Glass picked up his seventh win of the season making 45 saves on 47 shots. Glass was named the Second Star of the game. Defenseman Jake Ortmeyer was named the Third Star of the game after registering two assists on the night.

Friday, January 6, 2006 @ Augusta, L, 3-7 The Augusta Lynx scored three goals in the first period and four in the third period for a 7-3 triumph over the Checkers Friday night in Georgia. Dan Sullivan and Joe Pereira each scored a pair of goals for the Lynx in the victory.

Luke Stauffacher, Mike Bayrack and Jake Ortmeyer scored the Charlotte goals, with goalie Chris Holt taking the loss with 32 saves while facing 39 shots. The loss snapped a Checkers four-game winning streak, and saw their record on their current nine-game in 13-day schedule fall to 4-3-1. In five games against Augusta this season, Charlotte is 3-2-0.

Saturday, January 7, 2006 @ Greenville, L, 3-4 The Greenville Grrrowl scored a pair of goals in a 22-second span in the second period, the second proving to be the game winner, in a 4-3 victory over the Charlotte Checkers Saturday night at the Bi-Lo Center. Allan Sirois and Duncan Dalmao scored the two second period goals for Greenville, just after Mike Bayrack had given the Checkers a 3-2 advantage midway through the period.

Dusty Jamieson and Bryan Rodney scored first period goals for Charlotte, while the Grrrowl got power-play goals in the first from Les Haggett and Cody Blanshan. Charlotte goalie Jeff Glass took the loss in net with 36 saves, while Greenville netminder Mike Morrison made 28 saves in getting the victory.
