San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls have acquired left-winger Mark Wires from the Phoenix Roadrunners in exchange for defenseman Chet Ferreira, head coach Martin St. Amour announced on Monday. Wires will be available to play Tuesday in Las Vegas against the Wranglers
The 23-year-old Wires has 10 points (3g, 7a) in 25 games split between Phoenix and the Trenton Titans. He began the season with Trenton before signing with Phoenix on Nov. 29.
Wires split last season, his rookie year, between the Texas Wildcatters and Central Hockey League's Laredo Bucks. In 37 games for Texas, the 5-foot-11-inch, 180-pounder from North York, Ontario notched eight points (3g, 5a) and 23 penalty minutes. In 29 games for Laredo, he recorded 19 points (7g, 12a) and 24 penalty minutes. Wires also appeared in 16 playoff games for the Bucks, registering 10 points (3g, 7a) and 24 penalty minutes. Laredo advanced all the way to the President's Cup Finals before losing to the eventual champion Colorado Eagles (Tyler Weiman and David Svagrovsky's team).
The 24-year-old Ferreira is in his first professional season after beginning his pro career late last season with the Gulls. In 25 games with San Diego this season, the 6-foot-3-inch, 205-pounder from Wilmington, Mass. has six points (1g, 5a) and 30 penalty minutes.
The Gulls return to action Tuesday in Las Vegas, with game-time from the Orleans Arena set for 7:05 p.m. San Diego is back home Friday "The 13th" against the Bakersfield Condors. It will be a "Free Food Fright Night," with the first 3,500 fans receiving a free hot dog. Saturday, the Aces will be back in town and the first 6,000 fans will get a special Willie O'Ree ball cap.
All games can be heard on KLSD 1360AM and www.sandiegogulls.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play.
