Titans Sweep Three-Game Weekend
January 9, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ - The Trenton Titans extended their winning streak to a season high four games as they completed a sweep of their three-game, three-day weekend. The Titans remain in third place in the North, but are only six points behind the Wheeling Nailers and Reading Royals who are tied atop the division.
Trenton fell one goal short of their all-time high as they registered nine goals a 9-1 drubbing of the Dayton Bombers on Friday at the Nutter Center. Despite outshooting the Bombers 17-4 in the first period, the Titans trailed 1-0 after one on Paul Kelly's goal at 4:55. From there, the rout was on for Trenton. Brian McConnell, Chris Pittman and Peter Tormey each tallied two goals and Scott Bertoli (4a) and Stephen Wood (1g, 3a) led all skaters with four points. The Titans' five-goal third period tied an all-time record for goals scored in period.
On Saturday, Jim Henkel's power play goal 1:24 into the second period helped the Titans stake a 3-0 lead over the Reading Royals. A depleted Royals team refused to go away as Larry Courville's goal and Chris Bala's shorthanded tally pulled Reading with in one. With Trenton forced to kill off a penalty in the waning seconds of regulation, Chris Pittman notched two short-handed empty net goals to clinch the 5-2 Titans' win.
With the chance to seal a perfect weekend, the Titans found themselves up 1-0 over the Wheeling Nailers heading into the third frame after Mathieu Brunelle's power play goal late in the first. In a span of 1:20, however, Trenton was suddenly down 2-1 after a shorthander by Brandon Hodge and an even-strength goal by Eric Sonnenberg. Scott Bertoli got his team heading back in the right direction by tying the score 2-2 at 12:53 of the third period. Aaron Gill tipped in the game-winner with 4:21 left in regulation to make the final score 3-2.
The Titans head into another three-game weekend as they play guests to the Dayton Bombers on Friday, January 13 and Saturday January 14. Trenton finishes its road trip on Sunday, January 15 versus the Wheeling Nailers.
