Charlotte Checkers News Release
AUGUSTA, GA: The Charlotte Checkers were playing their fifth game in six days Sunday afternoon in Augusta, Georgia against the Lynx. The minds were willing but the legs were not. A tired Checkers team played hard with what little energy they had left but finally succumbed to Augusta 6-4. Matt Dzieduszycki scored a hat trick for the Lynx and Augusta struck for four power-play goals in the victory. Mike Wirll and Dusty Jamieson each had a pair of goals for the Checkers and goalie Alex Westlund suffered his first loss of the week after three wins.
The loss was the first in regulation for the Checkers in the five-game stretch. Charlotte went 3-1-1 for the week, earning seven of a possible ten points. Jamieson was torrid for the Checkers with seven goals in the team's last four games. Charlotte ended the six-game season series against Augusta going 4-2-0.
"The guys fought hard but you could see they were a tired group," commented Charlotte coach Derek Wilkinson. "I'm really happy with the week we had considering the amount of games we had to play, all the players going back and forth all week from Hartford, and how banged up we are."
The Lynx grabbed a 1-0 first-period lead on a power play as Dzieduszycki scored his first of three goals on the day. In the second period Augusta out-scored the Checkers two to one for a 3-1 advantage with Wirll notching the only Checkers goal in the period. Wirll scored again in the final period and Jamieson struck twice to pull Charlotte to within one at 5-4. But after pulling Westlund for an extra attacker in the final minute, Dzieduszycki scored his third goal of the game into an empty net for the 6-4 final.
Charlottes' record fell to 28-17-3 for 59 points while the Lynx improved to 17-24-7 for 41 points.
Charlotte will begin another five game in six day stretch next week as it continues a ten-game in 14 day stint Tuesday night when it hosts the Columbia Inferno at 7:00 p.m. at Cricket Arena. Tuesday's game is a makeup game from the postponed January 29 contest.
