Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies News Release

ATLANTIC CITY - WEEK RECORD: 2-2-0 - SEASON RECORD: 25-16-6 - 3rd NORTH DIVISION

BULLIES REWIND: The Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies earned a split of their four games this week to maintain their hold on third place in the North Division. With 25 games remaining in the regular season, the Bullies trail first place co-leaders Toledo and Wheeling by just two points, but lead fourth place Reading and Trenton by only a single point. The Bullies are still giving up three games in hand to Trenton and four games in hand to Reading.

Tuesday, Colin Shields netted the equalizer at 6:59 of the third period, his second tally of the game, and Paul Caponigri tallied the loan goal in the shootout to lead the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies to a 4-3 shootout victory over the Dayton Bombers before 1410 at the EJ Nutter Center. Dayton (14-26-3) opened the scoring at 13:59 of the first period. Tyler Kolarik picked up Brett Nowak's rebound in the slot and slipped it behind Bullies goaltender Trevor Koenig to give the Bombers a 1-0 lead. The clubs would each trade a pair of goals in the second period. Scott Horvath netted the equalizer for Atlantic City (24-14-6), tipping the centering feed from Kelsey Muench through Dayton goaltender Simon Lajeunesse at 4:05 to tie the game 1-1. Dayton would strike back with a pair of power play goals. Tyler Scott collected Mathieu Brunelle's rebound at the left-wing circle and fired the puck through Koenig at 10:37 on the power play to give the Bombers a 2-1 lead. Brunelle made it 3-1 when he found Scott's rebound at the side of the cage and slipped it past an out-of-position Koenig at 14:31 on the power play. The Bullies would counter as Shields swatted Dave Reid's rebound off Lajeunesse and into the net at 16:45 on the power play to cut the deficit to 3-2. Dayton out-shot Atlantic City 43-29. Koenig stopped 40 shots to improve to 12-7-2 on the season. The Bullies went 1-2 on the power play.

Wednesday, Goaltender Scott Fankhouser stopped all 19 Atlantic City shots to lead the Toledo Storm to a 5-0 victory over the Boardwalk Bullies before 2634 at the Toledo Sports Arena. Toledo opened the scoring with a power play goal at 12:12 of the first period. Tyler Knight redirected Paul Ballantyne's point shot above the right shoulder of Bullies goaltender Trevor Koenig to give the Storm a 1-0 lead. Nick Parillo increased the lead to 2-0 in the second period, when shorthanded he stripped Brian Fahey of the puck at the Bullies blue line, broke in alone at the net, and slipped the puck through the pads of Koenig at 8:47. Toledo struck for three goals in the third period to put the game out of reach. Scooter Smith beat Koenig top shelf with a slap shot from the slot at 2:47 of the period to increase the lead to 3-0. Tomas Micka made it 4-0 when he sidestepped Derek Edwardson at the right-wing circle and fired a wrist-shot through Koenig's pads at 10:26. Todd Jackson finished the scoring with a goal at 14:47 to make the final 5-0. Toledo out-shot Atlantic City 25-19. Koenig made 19 saves in falling to 12-8-2 on the season. The Bullies went 0-5 on the power play.

Friday, Fraser Clair netted the equalizer 31 seconds into the third period with a shorthanded goal and then clinched the win in a shootout to propel the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies to a 3-2 shootout victory over the Trenton Titans before 2655 at Historic Boardwalk Hall. The win snapped the Bullies three-game home winless streak. Connor Dunlop opened the scoring for Trenton (23-13-7) at 3:48 of the first period when he collected Scott Bertoli's rebound on the weak side and tucked the puck underneath Bullies goaltender Trevor Koenig to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. Atlantic City (25-15-6) quickly responded with a power play goal at 14:37 of the period. Jason Notermann made a terrific move wide around Trenton's Paul Brown at the right-wing circle and tipped the puck over the left shoulder of Titans goalie Andrew Allen to tie the game at 1-1. Matt Zultek regained the lead for Trenton at 17:04 of the first when he stripped Ian Walterson of the puck at the Bullies blue line, broke in from the left-wing circle and beat Koenig top shelf for a 2-1 advantage. It would remain that way until the opening minute of the third period. Colin Shields pushed the puck up the left-wing boards past a Titans defenseman and onto the welcoming stick of Clair who broke in alone on Allen and beat him to the low blocker side 31 seconds into the third to tie the game at 2-2. Clair and Caponigri each netted goals in the shootout while Koenig stopped all four Trenton shooters. Trenton out-shot Atlantic City 37-30. Koenig made 35 saves to improve to 13-8-2 on the season. The Bullies went 1-6 on the power play.

Saturday, Larry Courville netted a pair of power play goals in the third period including both the equalizer and game-winning goal to lead the Reading Royals to a 4-2 victory over the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies before 2178 at Historic Boardwalk Hall. Reading (25-14-3) opened the scoring with a power play tally at the end of the first period. Adam Borzecki's shot from the point sifted its way past a screened Bullies goaltender Trevor Koenig and into the back of the net at 18:28 to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. The Bullies (25-16-6) countered with a pair of power play goals in the second period to claim the lead. On a two-man advantage situation, Colin Shields found Jason Notermann in the slot, and Notermann ripped a shot over the left shoulder of Reading goaltender Barry Brust at 10:29 to tie the game at 1-1. Shields gave the Bullies a 2-1 lead, their first lead of the game, when he tipped Fraser Clair's shot from the right point past Brust at 13:28 on the power play to send Atlantic City into the second intermission ahead. However Reading, who started the third period on a power play, netted the equalizer as Courville re-directed Tom Galvin's point shot past Koenig 41 seconds into the period to tie the game at 2-2. The Royals would regain the lead at 7:22 on another power play goal when Preston Mizzi fed the puck across to the right-wing circle to an open Courville, and Courville banged a slap shot into the net past an out-of-position Koenig for a 3-2 advantage. Cail MacLean sealed the win for Reading with an empty-net goal at 19:54 of the period. Reading out-shot Atlantic City 38-31. Koenig stopped 34 shots in falling to 13-9-2 on the season. The Bullies went 2-8 on the power play, while allowing three power play goals on nine chances to Reading, matching a season-worst set back on January 23 at Peoria.

BULLIES "TOP DAWG" AWARD: Each Monday from now until the end of the season, Public Relations and Broadcasting Manager Dan Weiss will select the Bullies "Top Dawg" for the week. This week's winner is rookie forward Colin Shields who tallied three goals and added three assists to pace the Bullies to two wins during the week. Shields, acquired from San Diego on January 4, has four goals and seven points in his first six games with Atlantic City. Honorable mention goes out to Jason Notermann who recorded a pair of goals and now leads the Bullies with 22 markers for the season.

HEARTBREAKERS: It's somewhat ironic that the Bullies enter Valentine's Day on the heels of surrendering another third period lead. With a record of 17-3-3 when leading after two periods, the Bullies are tied for the most losses in regulation when leading after forty minutes with Pee Dee, and are second with six overall defeats, one behind the Johnstown Chiefs who are 9-1-6 when leading after two. What's even more heartbreaking is that Saturday's game marked just the fourth time in the last 18 games that the Bullies entered the third period with a lead.

MR. POWER PLAY: With two more power play goals this weekend, Bullies forward Jason Notermann has reclaimed the ECHL lead with 12 power play goals. Notermann, who tallied just five power play goals last season in Johnstown, leads the Bullies and is tied for fifth in the ECHL scoring race with 22 goals.

SHOOTOUT SHARPSHOOTERS: Fraser Clair and Paul Caponigri have teamed up to form a dynamic duo for the Bullies when it comes to shootouts. Clair is three-for-three in shootouts this season, while Caponigri is four-for-five. Goaltender Trevor Koenig has stopped the first nine shooters he's faced in a Bullies uniform and is third in the ECHL in shootout save percentage at 83.3% (20-24). Atlantic City has won three consecutive shootouts after Friday's win, and is 5-4 in shootouts this year.

FACE-OFF AGAINST KIDS CANCER CULMINATES: The Boardwalk Bullies officially culminated the second annual "Face-Off Against Kids Cancer" yesterday with a special farewell "Bullies Brunch" served by the players at Resorts Hotel & Casino. Sponsored by Benchmark Mortgage and Joe Scrocca for a second consecutive season, the "Face-Off Against Kids Cancer" raised over $12,000 in support of Caps For Kids, duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware, and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia with the hope that one day a cure for cancer can be found

The Bullies would also like to extend a special thanks to the Seaview Marriott & Resort in Galloway who also offered free stays in support of the James Beck Foundation. The final totals raised for each cause will be released in the coming weeks.
