Sacramento River Cats News Release
RENO, Nev. - Sonny Gray limited Reno to two runs on six hits with six strikeouts in six innings pitched but suffered his fourth loss as the River Cats fell by a score of 4-1 on Tuesday evening at Aces Ballpark.
Gray held the Aces hitless in the game's first two innings, but gave up a single to Ed Easley and a two-run home run to Brent Clevlen in the bottom of the third, giving Reno a 2-0 advantage. After Gray made his exit, the Aces put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the eighth on back-to-back RBI-doubles from Mike Jacobs and Matt Davidson.
The River Cats-who entered the top of the ninth with just three hits-strung together a couple base knocks to end the shutout. The team's only RBI and extra-base hit came with one swing of the bat when Luke Montz brought home Scott Moore on a ninth-inning double. That was all offense the Cats would muster, however, as they suffered their first loss in Reno of the season, 4-1.
Gray (6-4) now has a 2.48 ERA on the season. Reliever Pedro Figueroa tossed one scoreless inning, while Mike Ekstrom permitted two earned on three hits in one inning of work.
Sacramento's one-through-five hitters each went 1-for-4 on the night, while their six-through-nine hitters all went hitless. Jeremy Barfield drew Sacramento's lone walk, going 0-for-2. Montz recorded the team's only RBI and Moore scored the team's only run.
The win was awarded to Garrett Mock (4-3), who held the River Cats to two hits in five shutout innings in a spot start. Chaz Roe allowed the only River Cats run in one inning of relief, and Mike Jacobs paced the Aces offensively, going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
The two teams return to Aces Ballpark at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday night when southpaw Andrew Werner (5-8, 5.53 ERA) takes on Aces righty Mike Bolsinger (1-0, 1.50 ERA) in game three of the series.
