Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Southpaw Martin Perez dazzled once again as the Round Rock Express (37-30) took game three of a four-game set against the Albuquerque Isotopes (34-32) Wednesday night by a final score of 4-2.
The left-hander was dominant throughout the night, allowing just one unearned run en route to the 23rd home victory for the Express.
The Isotopes struck first off the left-hander, plating a run in the top of the second. Albuquerque shortstop Ozzie Martinez singled with two outs and advanced to second on a wild pitch, putting himself in scoring position. Martinez eventually came around to score on a ground ball that went under the glove of third baseman Mike Olt and trickled away from shortstop Yangervis Solarte. With the error charged to Olt, the run was unearned but still put the E-Train behind 1-0.
Round Rock battled back, loading the bases in the bottom half of the frame on a pair of singles by Olt and designated hitter Joey Butler along with a perfectly placed bunt by right fielder Jim Adduci. Albuquerque starter Aaron Laffey retired the next batter via a fly out but then got wild, walking the next two batters to force in two runs. The inning eventually came to an end on a 4-6-3 double play, but the damage was done as the E-Train grabbed a 2-1 lead.
The Express added to its lead one frame later when left fielder Aaron Cunningham crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Olt, making the score 3-1.
Perez settled in, blanking the "ÃËTopes for the next four innings after allowing the unearned run in the second. The left-hander exited after 6.0 innings, scattering eight hits while striking out six as he ended his night in line for his fourth straight win.
The E-Train offense gave the pitching staff a three-run cushion in the seventh when Olt knocked in his second run of the evening, a RBI double to put the Express ahead 4-1.
The bullpen shut the door, allowing just one run over the last 3.0 innings as relievers Joseph Ortiz and Cory Burns combined to close out the game. Perez picked up the victory after turning in his fourth consecutive quality start, while Burns earned his team-leading 15th save.
The Express concludes the four-game series with the Isotopes Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Round Rock will send right-hander Evan Meek (0-3, 4.91 ERA) to the mound to face Albuquerque's Matt Palmer (2-3, 4.60 ERA). Dell Diamond will feature $1.00 sodas and discounted draft beers as a part of the Original Thirsty Thursday, presented by Firetrol.
