Iowa Cubs News Release
Oklahoma City, OK - Brian Bogusevic launched two home runs and Chris Rusin tossed seven shutout innings to lead the Iowa Cubs (30-35) to a 5-1 win over the Oklahoma City RedHawks (34-29) at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark tonight. The Cubs lead this series 2-1 and lead the season series 8-3. The Cubs have won as many games in this series as they have in the last two seasons combined (2-14) in Oklahoma City.
Rusin (5-6) allowed five hits, walked one, and struck out three to post his team-leading eighth quality start of the season. He also turned in some spectacular defense. With Andy Simunic on first and one out in the bottom of the fifth, Carlos Perez hit a rocket back up the middle that Rusin caught and then doubled off Simunic for one of two double plays for the Cubs on defense tonight.
Bogusevic provided the offense against RedHawks' stater Brett Oberholtzer. Donnie Murphy led off the top of the second, stole second, and with two outs trotted home as Bogusevic crushed his first home run onto the berm in right-center field. Bogusevic's second homer came in the seventh inning. With Brad Nelson at first after a leadoff walk, Bogusevic hammered this second long ball into the RedHawks' bullpen in left-center field. It was the outfielder's third career multi-homer game and the fourth for a Cubs' player in the last six games. Oberholtzer (4-5) finished with seven strikeouts in seven innings, but suffered his third loss against the Cubs this year.
The RedHawks spoiled the shutout with a run in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out single by Jose Martinez off Barret Loux. Loux did strike out the side in his first career relief appearance. The Cubs added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Junior Lake scored as J.C. Boscan reached on a fielder's choice. Brian Schlitter struck out two in the bottom of the ninth to finish off the win.
The Cubs and RedHawks wrap up this series tomorrow night at 7:05. RH Nick Struck (3-4, 6.24) will start for the Cubs against RH Brad Peacock (1-2, 4.98) for the RedHawks. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed at iowacubs.com, with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
