Sky Sox' Rally Falls Short in 3-2 Loss to Bees
June 12, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (35-29) rallied late but fell short as they lost 3-2 to the Salt Lake Bees (34-33) on Wednesday afternoon at Security Service Field.
A.J Schugel (4-4) picked up the win after tossing six shutout innings giving up just four hits while walking two and striking out six. In three starts against the Sky Sox this season, Schugel is now 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA (3er/18.1ip).
Jeff Manship (3-5) also turned in a good outing but was the tough-luck loser after giving up one run on four hits in 5.1 innings.
Salt Lake got on the board in the third inning on a RBI single by third baseman Luis Jimenez and then pushed their lead to 3-0 in the seventh on back-to-back RBI singles by Matt Long and Andrew Romine. Those last two runs came off Parker Frazier who worked 1.2 innings in relief of Manship.
The Sky Sox tried to mount a comeback late and had plenty opportunities but came up short. Ben Paulsen drove in a run in the seventh with an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1 and the Sox later loaded the bases with one out in the inning. The Sox were unable to capitalize though as Charlie Blackmon popped out and Josh Rutledge struck out. The Sox had runners on second and third in the eighth but couldn't deliver then either. The ninth inning started with Bees closer Ryan Brasier getting two easy groundouts but the Sox strung together three straight single by Blackmon, Rutledge and Corey Dickerson to cut the lead to 3-2. Dickerson's RBI single would end the scoring though as Matt McBride grounded out and Brasier notched his seventh save.
The final game of the four-game series is set for tomorrow night at 7:05 PM with RH Cory Riordan (4-1, 5.59) set to take on RH Matt Shoemaker (5-8, 4.75).
Sky Sox Notes: Corey Dickerson was moved from the leadoff spot to third in the order and finished 2-for-2 with three walks to increase his PCL-leading average to .363... The Sox finished the game 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position
