Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Alaska Aces begin a difficult stretch of four games in five nights with a travel day in between tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. when the San Diego Gulls arrive for the first of two at Sullivan Arena.

The Aces return home after a 1-2 road trip, with losses to Las Vegas and Bakersfield sandwiched around a 33-save gem turned in by rookie goaltender Lance Mayes, who shut out the Ice Dogs 4-0 Friday night in his very first professional start. Alaska's second line of Charles Linglet, Kimbi Daniels, and Joe Talbot all contributed a goal and an assist, giving Mayes plenty of offensive support. Talbot accounted for the only goal two nights earlier as the Aces fell 2-1 despite Dan Murphy's best effort of the year. The veteran netminder kept Alaska in the game with a season-high 27 saves.

Nolan Graham and Dave Csumrik each had a goal and a helper Saturday as the Aces led 3-2 in the second period of their game with the Condors, but Bakersfield rallied for a 6-4 victory to send Alaska to its third loss in four games. At 5-4, the Aces are tied for third place with the Fresno Falcons in the seven-team Pacific Division, where the top four teams will qualify for the 2003 Kelly Cup playoffs. Alaska continues to rank among the top ten in both penalty killing (4th, 90.2%) and power play (T-6th, 22%) statistics. The Aces also have scored the most shorthanded goals (four) and have given up the most (four).

Alaska tangles with the Gulls Tuesday and Wednesday at the Sully before heading back on the road for Friday and Saturday night games in Boise against Idaho. Both weekend tilts against the Steelheads, who have won three straight to raise their record to 7-5, will begin at 5:00 p.m. AST. All Aces games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
