DURHAM, NC - Bulls second baseman Jonathan Aranda smashed two hits and drove in two runs, while starting pitcher Nathan Wiles fanned seven batters over five solid innings and three relievers joined forces for the final four scoreless frames as Durham topped the Charlotte Knights 4-2 on Thursday evening at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
After the Knights plated a two-spot in the top of the second, the Bulls answered courtesy of C Nick Dini's RBI single to left. Two frames later, Aranda gave Durham the 3-2 lead by bashing a two-run double off the left field wall. RF Ruben Cardenas would then come across via a wild pitch in the next inning.
Aranda (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB) and 1B Ben Gamel (2-3, R, BB) each posted multi-hit efforts. Aranda's two-hit game marked the tenth time over his last 13 contests he has recorded two or more knocks. During that span, he has hit .529 (27-51) with nine runs, six doubles, two homers and 15 RBI.
Wiles earned his second straight win with the Bulls, yielding two earned runs on five hits over five innings, adding seven punchouts. Relievers Jose Lopez (1.1 IP, 2 BB, 2 SO), Trevor Brigden (1.2 IP, H, 3 SO) and Michael Mercado (1.0 IP, 3 SO), combined for the final four scoreless frames in support of Wiles, with Mercado notching the save. Knights starter John Parke (3.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB,3 SO) suffered the defeat.
The two teams are set to face off again on Friday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35pm. LHP Jacob Lopez (2-1, 2.50) is anticipated to get the nod for Durham and is slated to be opposed by RHP Sean Burke (1-4, 7.61).
