St. Paul Saints News Release

LOUISVILLE, KY - Two of the more high-octane offenses in the International League played what they would consider a low scoring affair. The St. Paul Saints homered for the 20th consecutive game, but gave up three long balls and had their three-game win streak snapped at the hands of the Louisville Bats, 6-3 on Thursday night at Louisville Slugger Field. The loss drops the Saints to 38-27.

The turning point of the game may have come in the first inning. Facing Teddy Stankiewicz, a starter who came in with a 12.75 ERA across four starts, the Saints loaded the bases with the first three hitters as Andrew Stevenson tripled and Jose Miranda and Matt Wallner walked. With one out, Kyle Garlick gave the Saints a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to right, but one of the more potent teams with the bases loaded in all of the Minor Leagues would get just that one run.

The momentum shifted in the bottom of the inning as Major League rehabber Joey Votto, who is no stranger to the long ball, tied the game with a solo homer to right, his third on Major League rehab.

The Bats grabbed their first lead of the series with another long ball, a solo homer to right-center from Jason Vosler, his first of the night and sixth of the season, making it 2-1.

In the fourth, the Bats hit their third home run of the game. With one out, Henry Ramos walked. Vosler followed with a two-run homer to center, his second of the night and seventh of the season, putting the Bats up 4-1.

The Bats added to their lead in the fifth as Votto led off with a double to right. He scored on a single from Christian Encarnacion-Strand increasing the lead to 5-1.

For the 20th consecutive game, the Saints got a long ball as Andrew Stevenson homered in his second consecutive game, a solo blast to center, cutting the deficit to 5-2. Stevenson finished the night 2-4 with a triple, homer run, an RBI, and two runs scored. The 20-consecutive games with a home run is the third longest in the Minor Leagues this season only behind Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's 21 and the current streak by Binghamton of 23.

Chris Williams continued his unconscious hitting this week as he homered for the third consecutive game for the first time in his career, a solo blast to left, his sixth in three games and 13th of the season, getting the Saints to within two at 5-3. Williams extended his hitting streak to 11 games, one shy of his career-high.

The Saints would get no closer, however, as the Bats tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the inning. Ramos led off with a triple and Chuckie Robinson came through with a two-out ground rule double scoring Ramos making it 6-3.

The same two teams meet in game four of a six-game series at Louisville Slugger Field on Friday night at 6:15 p.m. (CT). The Saints send Major League rehabber, RHP Kenta Maeda (0-0, 2.00) to the mound against Bats RHP Levi Stoudt (2-2, 4.46). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
