Buffalo Wins Game Two of Doubleheader, 9-2

June 12, 2018 - International League (IL1) - Buffalo Bisons News Release

The Bisons squared off with the IronPigs twice Tuesday night and split the doubleheader in Allentown. After a loss in Game one, the Herd saw positive results at the plate as they took Game two. With the victory in the second game of the twin bill, Buffalo now has a 7-1 record in doubleheaders this season.

In Game one, the Bisons were shutout by IronPigs starter Enyel De Los Santos and a two-run bottom of the first inning were all the runs Lehigh Valley needed to capture a 2-0 win.

In Game two, the tides turned as the Herd grabbed a 9-2 victory. Buffalo plated four runs in the second, which was enough to defeat Lehigh Valley.

Game 1: Buffalo 0, Lehigh Valley 2

The first inning provided all the runs in the game and the IronPigs scored them both.

With two outs in the first, the IronPigs scored two runs on an RBI-double by Trevor Plouffe, who hit two home runs on Monday. Anthony Alford made a diving effort on the play, but the ball got past him, allowing Mitch Walding and Joey Meneses to score.

In the second and fourth innings, the Bisons had runners on the corners with one out, but double plays ended both the threats. The Herd outhit the IronPigs four to three but could not scratch runs across against De Los Santos. He threw a complete game shutout and struck out seven.

Nick Tepesch made his first start of the season and despite taking the loss, he had a fine outing. After allowing two runs in the first, the righty recovered the rest of the way in his five-inning start. Tepesch only gave up three hits and one walk while also punching out four batters. Before leaving the game, he retired ten straight hitters from the beginning of the second to the start of the fifth.

Game 2: Buffalo 9, Lehigh Valley 2

Unlike the first game of the doubleheader, the Bisons went on the offensive early and scattered 13 hits to all parts of the field, including six extra-base hits.

In the second, the Bisons seized a 4-1 lead on five hits--their most productive inning of the game.

The Herd started the frame with four consecutive extra-base hits. Leblebijian led off the inning by legging out a double. Then, Reese McGuire ripped the first pitch he saw and pulled it over the right-field fence for a two-run home run.

For a fourth-straight batter, the Bisons got an extra-base hit, this time on a triple from Ian Parmley. Tim Lopes doubled earlier in the inning and scored on Parmley's hit. Roemon Fields brought home Parmley on an RBI-single to give the Bisons the three-run edge.

Buffalo increased its lead to four in the third. Rowdy Tellez cranked a solo shot over the tall right-field wall at Coca-Cola Park, his fourth of the year. Then, McGuire connected for an RBI-single to score Leblebijian from second base.

Rowdy Tellez went back to work in the fourth and brought in another run on an opposite-field single and in the sixth, he slapped a pitch to the left side for his third RBI of the game. One batter later, Leblebijian delivered an RBI groundout to push the lead to 9-2.

In just his second start of the year, Luis Santos pitched five solid innings. He surrendered two runs on an RBI-double from Adron Chambers in the first and on an RBI-single from Dean Anna in the second, but only one run went against his line. He also only allowed five hits.

The Bisons' relievers supplied a combined three scoreless innings. Justin Shafer threw 1.1 innings and got the win. Jake Petricka closed out the sixth in 0.2 innings pitched and only allowed one hit. Dusty Isaacs faced the top of the order in the seventh and put the IronPigs away to polish off the decisive victory.
