Reed Deals Strong Innings as Bats Fall 6-2

June 12, 2018 - International League (IL1) - Louisville Bats News Release

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Despite an extremely strong display of pitching by Louisville starter Cody Reed, the Bats (22-38) fell 6-2 in the second game of the four-game set against the Columbus Clippers (31-31).

With rainy conditions delaying the game by an hour and a half, Cody Reed (0-4, 4.69) set the tone of the night by throwing a 95-mph fastball down the middle of the plate. Reed, in search of his first win of the season, was extremely impressive despite the loss. He threw for 7.2 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) from six hits, while walking one and striking out eleven. His 11 strikeouts are the most for Bats pitcher since Keyvius Sampson on June 2, 2016 against Toledo.

Columbus righty, Shane Bieber (3-1, 1.38) took the win after keeping the Louisville hitters off the board during his first 7.1 innings of work. He allowed two runs, one earned, from five hits while walking one and striking out five.

Both teams were slow to get going offensively, but it was ultimately the Clippers who were able to take an early lead and seal the game. The third inning produced the first runs of the night when a fielding error put Todd Hankins at first. He was then brought home by a two-run homer from Adam Rosales to put the Clippers ahead by two.

Both teams were kept off the board again until the top of the seventh when the Clippers scored their third of the night. Yu Chang doubled to center field and was then pushed to third by a sacrifice bunt. A single line drive brought him home to make it 3-0.

The Clippers began to heat up again in the eighth. Following a walk, Tyler Naquin doubled to center field. Domingo Tapia then took the mound for Louisville when a passed ball brought Yandy Diaz home, followed by a triple from Brandon Barnes, putting Columbus ahead 5-0.

The Bats made their own offensive surge in the following frame and the singles just kept on coming. Chadwick Tromp opened with a single and Blake Trahan then reached on a fielding error. A wild pitch advanced both players when Nick Senzel came up to bat, hitting a ground out to score Tromp. The rush continued when Josh VanMeter slashed another single to score Trahan. Gabriel Guerrero connected for a third single to load the bases before the end of the inning.

The Clippers would have the final say with the final run of the night. A sacrifice fly scored Mike Papi in the ninth to make it 6-2 Columbus.

Nick Senzel delivered another solid performance as the Bats leadoff hitter, going two for three in the loss. He is now 8-for-13 (.615) when opening for Louisville.

The Bats are back in action Wednesday night for game three against the Columbus Clippers. Louisville's Robert Stephenson (4-5, 4.11) will face off against Columbus righty Mitch Talbot (0-1, 3.24). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. at Louisville Slugger Field.
