Abbotsford Heat News Release

ABBOTSFORD BC - For the second consecutive evening, the Abbotsford Heat and Providence Bruins had to go to the shootout to find a winner. For the second straight night, the Bruins prevailed, this time in a six round shootout, 3-2 over the Abbotsford Heat Wednesday night in the Fraser Valley.

The Heat would open the scoring just 2:17 into period one. David Van der Gulik would score his eleventh of the season on a pretty pass from Jason Jaffray behind the goal. Jaffray's dish would lead to Van der Gulik one timing a shot past Bruins keeper Kevin Regan to make the score 1-0 after one period of play.

In the second period, the Bruins would score twice to grab the lead, with both goals being scored by Jordan Knackstedt. On his first goal at 13:12 of the middle stanza, the Bruins winger would slide into the Heat zone and rifle a wrist shot past a screened David Shantz to tie the game at 1-1. With just two minutes left in the period, Knackstedt would tip in a beautiful feed from Jamie Arniel to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead after two periods of play.

In the third period, the Heat would strike early, in fact just nine seconds in. Cam Cunning would take a Garth Murray pass at centre, and turn on the jets, catching Bruins defender Rob Kwiet by surprise. Cunning would get around Kwiet and throw a shot under the crossbar past a startled Regan. The Heat would tie the game 2-2 at that point. A scoreless remainder of the third and overtime would send the two teams once again to the skills competition.

In the shootout, POCO product Zach Hamill would open the scoring in round two with a nifty move on Shantz. The Heat would need a goal in round five, and Heat captain Garth Murray would tie it up with a shot that beat Regan high over the blocker. However, Yannick Reindeau would wrap it up with the winner for the Bruins in the following round.

The Heat move two points clear of the Rochester Americans for second place in the North Division with the shootout loss. Abbotsford will now face Worcester on Friday and Saturday night in the Valley.

You can catch all of the Heat action on Country 107.1 FM, with the game time this Friday from the AESC beginning with the Honda Way pre game show at 7 pm. Dave will be joined in the booth by Sportsnet Pacific Bureau Chief Craig MacEwen.
