Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers finally made it to overtime for the third time in 46 games on Friday night, and in doing so, they took both points, ending the Reading Royals' 12-game winning streak. Jarrett Burton scored twice during regulation, then set up Riley Brace's winning goal at the 3:13 mark of the extra session, lifting his team to the 3-2 triumph.

Both teams dented the twine in the opening period, doing so in a span of 1:59. The Nailers connected for the first goal at the 8:07 mark, making the magic happen off of an offensive zone face-off. Jarrett Burton won the draw back to Paul Cianfrini, who immediately put a slap shot on goal. Connor Knapp made the save, but the rebound sat free for Burton, who jammed it through the netminder's legs. Reading drew even a bit later, capitalizing on a rare 4-on-3 man power situation. David Marshall's bomb got blocked by Clark Seymour, but the rebound kicked out to Cam Reid, who hammered a shot in along the ice for the equalizer.

Two goals were also scored in the middle frame, with one going each way. This time, it was the Royals who struck first. Olivier Labelle won a battle for the puck in the right corner, allowing Cam Reid to set up Michael Caruso, who connected on a shot from the bottom of the right circle. 2:01 later, Wheeling tied the contest, utilizing a two-man advantage. Zack Torquato took the puck in the right circle, slipping a pass to the top of the crease, where it was redirected home by Burton for his second marker of the evening.

The two sides battled through a scoreless third period, making overtime necessary for just the third time in 46 games this season. At the 3:13 mark of the extra session, the home team got to celebrate, as Riley Brace banked a shot in off of Knapp from the left side of the goal line. Burton picked up his third point of the night with the lead assist, as the Nailers grabbed the bonus point with the 3-2 victory.

Eric Hartzell was the winning netminder for Wheeling, as he washed away 29 of 31 shots. Connor Knapp took the overtime loss for Reading, making 32 saves on 35 shots.
