Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (10-6-0) suffered their first defeat on home ice this season as the Pensacola Ice Pilots (3-10-1) battled their way to a 3-1 victory on Saturday night at Germain Arena in front of a crowd of 5,651.
Luke Erickson notched a pair of goals for the Ice Pilots, including the game-winning tally early in the second period with Pensacola short-handed. The game opened up in good fashion for the Everblades as Brad Zancanaro gave Florida a 1-0 lead a little over four minutes into the game. His shot from the top of the right circle sailed up over the glove of Pensacola net-minder Mike Brodeur at 4:24 of the frame. Mathieu Melanson extended his point scoring streak to nine straight games with the lone assist on Zancanaro's fifth goal of the season.
Pensacola responded quickly scoring the tying goal just 33 seconds later. Erickson picked up a loose puck at the top of the crease after a goal-mouth scramble and lifted it into the net at 5:07 evening the scoring at one. Erickson then scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal at 4:14 of the second period after picking up a rebound from Everblades goaltender Tyler Plante to complete a 2-on-1 short-handed rush. The short-handed goal was the first allowed by the Everblades this season and was the first of the year for the Ice Pilots.
The physical play ratcheted up as the game moved into the third period with the score remaining 2-1 midway through the frame. The Everblades twice hit the goalpost in the third period but couldn't find a way to get the equalizer past Brodeur to tie the game. The Ice Pilots sealed the win when Chris Straube completed a 2-on-1 by chipping the puck under the cross bar with 1:44 remaining in regulation for his first goal of the season.
Plante (4-3-0) suffered the tough-luck loss after making 34 saves, many of them in spectacular fashion shots, including 20 in the first period of play. Brodeur (2-2-0) picked up the win after making 43 saves, including stopping all 20 shots he faced in the third period.
On the power play, the Everblades closed out night 0-for-9, while the Ice Pilots finished 0-for-6.
