Augusta Lynx News Release
Augusta Lynx Head Coach Bob Ferguson has announced that the Portland Pirates have assigned goaltender Bobby Goepfert to the Augusta Lynx. Goepfert signed with the Pirates at the beginning of this season after playing last season for the St. Cloud State Huskies of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Goepfert was a 2002 NHL Draft pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins (Round 6, #171 overall).
His assignment to Augusta marks the first time this season that Goepfert will be in action. Goepfert spent training camp with the Portland Pirates, but has been recovering from an injury since the season began and is now 100% healthy. "I am just happy to be playing and healthy again, and finally have a place to settle down in and call home for a while," said Goepfert, who joined Augusta on their current roadtrip through Mississippi and Florida . "I just hope to get back into action and play well." Last season Goepfert, 24, was a Hobey Baker Top 10 Selection and the 2nd athlete in history of SCSU hockey to earn the elite honor. Goepfert was also named to the All-WCHA First Team. Goepfert was a four-time WCHA Defensive Player of the Week selection during his two years at SCSU. Goepfert, who hails from Kings Park, New York, is very familiar with some teammates on the Augusta roster. Goepfert spent first two collegiate seasons at Providence College where he played with current Lynx teammates Jason Platt, Eric Lundberg, and Chase Watson. Goepfert appeared in 41 career games with the Friars, but transferred to St. Cloud State after the 2003-04 season, where he thrived and gained national recognition. Goepfert's best statistical season came during his first year at SCSU in 2005-06 where he was named a 2006 AHCA Division I All-America Second Team West selection. Goepfert also gained 2006 INCH All-America Third Team honors and All-USCHO.com Honorable Mention notice.
