Idaho Steelheads News Release

Boise, ID - Rookie goaltender Kellen Briggs stopped all 23 shots he faced to earn his first professional shutout and Marty Flichel contributed one goal and one assist in a 3-0 Steelheads victory over the Victoria Salmon Kings on Saturday night.

Having taken the last two games of the three-game series, the Steelheads (6-4-6) earned four of a possible six points from the West Division leaders, as they sent the Salmon Kings (11-5-0) to consecutive losses for the second time this season.

There was no scoring in the first period, with the shots favoring the Steelheads 16-7.

A crowd of 4,188 watched Flichel put the Steelheads in front 1-0 at 12:13 of the second period, as he collected his second goal in as many nights, and his fifth of the year. On the play, the Steelheads won an offensive zone face-off and Lance Galbraith took a wrist shot that Salmon Kings' goaltender Julien Ellis (37 saves) kicked behind the net, but Richard Clune grabbed the rebound and stuffed it back in front where Flichel swept it home.

The Steelheads added to their lead in the third period with a power play goal by Darrell Hay at the 6:04 mark. Hay's fifth of the season, all of which have come on the power play, helped the veteran defenseman continue his torrid pace, as he now has 12 points in his last 11 games. Flichel drew the only assist on Hay's blast, which extended the Steelheads' streak to nine straight games with at least one power play goal.

Midway through the third period Alexander Naurov capped the scoring with a slap shot over the glove of Ellis for his first marker of the season. Matt Craig got the only assist.

The final shots favored the Steelheads 40-23. The 40 shots are a season-high and in the last two games of the series the Steelheads mustered 76 shots to just 37 for the visitors. With the win, Briggs' record jumps to 3-2-1. Meanwhile, Ellis, who was tied for the ECHL lead with seven victories, lost for just the second time this year.

The Steelheads now hit the road for three games, as they travel to Las Vegas to battle the Wranglers beginning on Thursday, November 29. The puck drops at 10:30 a.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on 1350 AM, KTIK "The Ticket" or via the B2 Networks. Don't forget, Steelheads' single-game tickets can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com (using the print-at-home feature), by calling 331-TIXS or from the Qwest Arena box office.
