Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

The Salmon Kings were in search of their second win in the three game set versus the defending Kelly Cup Champion Idaho Steelheads in Boise. It was not to be though as the Kings were shutout 3-0 on Saturday night.

The first period saw both teams flying up and down the ice, but both Kings' goaltender Julien Ellis and his Idaho counterpart, Kellen Briggs, held the offenses at bay. No score after the first period.

Idaho was able to get on the board first. Ellis stopped the first two Idaho shots, but got his skate caught on the post and Marty Flichel slide the puck under him for the 1-0 lead. The Steelheads thought they had scored a few minutes later, but Flichel slide it off the inside of the post and the game remained 1-0. The Salmon Kings began to apply some pressure in the later stages of the second period, but were unable to beat Briggs. The Steelheads led 1-0 after 40 minutes.

The teams were playing 4-on-4 hockey when the Kings' Ryan Wade took an interference penalty. That would put the Idaho's top rated power play on the ice. The Kings had successfully killed off a 5-on-3 power play in the first period, but were not able to stop the Steelheads on this occasion. Darrell Hay blasted a rocket from the top of the circle and a screened Ellis had no chance to stop it and the Steelheads led 2-0. A turnover in the Kings end led to Idaho's third goal. Alexander Naurov counted his first of the season to extend the lead to 3-0. Briggs shut the door the rest of the way as Idaho won the rubber match 3-0 and took the three game set two wins to one.
