Wildcatters Continue Stingrays' Woes
November 24, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays tried to end the worst slide of the season by taking on the best team in the ECHL, the Texas Wildcatters. Unfortunately, a late power play goal by Travis Morin wasn't enough, as the fell 2-1, and extended their slide to 5 straight.
"I felt like the guys really didn't show up in the first two periods," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "I'm very disappointed in the way they played. This was a game we needed to win. We played hard and had success in the 3rd period, but one period is not a hockey game."
In the first period, the two teams skated scoreless for over 19 minutes. But with less than a minute to play in the period, 32 seconds to be exact, Ross Carlson scored his 6th goal of the season to give the Wildcatters a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.
The second period began the way the first period ended, as Brandon Benedict scored his 5th goal of the season, a power play goal, to give Texas a 2-0 lead, just 3:50 into the period.
The Rays would finally get on the board in the third period when Morin deflected a shot from Scott Romfo on the power play, to cut the lead in half. For Morin, it was his 10th goal of the season, the assists going to Romfo and Cail MacLean at 11:38.
With just over a minute to play the Stingrays pulled goalie Davis Parley in favor of the extra attacker. That, along with a grasping the puck penalty to Texas gave the Rays a 6 on 4 advantage with nearly a minute to play. Although they did get a number of chances, Peter Aubry did not allow anything else to get passed him, and the Rays fell by a final of 2-1.
The winning goaltender was Aubry who stopped 28 of the 29 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Parley who stopped 25 of 27 shots. The Stingrays went 1 for 7 on the power play, while killing of 6 of 7 short handed situations.
"It's important now that we put this game behind us," added Bednar. "These next games are without question must wins."
The Rays will now travel down South to take on the Mississippi Seawolves for a 2 game series. The next game will be on Tuesday and will start at 8:05 Eastern time.
