ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (7-3-3) downed the Charlotte Checkers (3-5-2) 6-2 in front of 6,024 at TECO Arena on Friday night. Florida rookie forwards Carl Mallette and Chad LaRose notched two goals in the Blades win. With the win, the Everblades maintained their hold on first place in the ECHL's Southern Division.
The Everblades struck first and made it 1-0 in the first period after Carl Mallette picked up his own rebound and jammed it into the net at the 6:43 mark.
Florida then made it 2-0 when Mallette picked up his second goal of the game in the second period after recently acquired forward Jay Legault slid the puck over to Mallette on a 2 on 1. The Everblades then grabbed a 3-0 lead on a power play goal off the stick of the ECHL's leading scorer Brian McCullough at the 15:46 mark of the period. Florida then took a commanding 4-0 lead when Chad LaRose found a loose puck in front of the net and banged it in at the 16:36 mark. Charlotte then made it 4-1 late in the second period with a goal from forward Doug Christiansen.
In the third period, Charlotte inched closer and made it 4-2 on a goal off the stick of forward Frances Belanger. However it was all Blades from there as Brent McDonald picked up his 7th goal of the year and Chad LaRose scored his second goal of the night to close the scoring and give the Blades a 6-2 victory.
Florida goaltender Jeff Maund (4-1-0) stopped 23 of 25 shots he faced while Charlotte netminder David St. Germain (2-2-2) stopped 18 of 24 shots he faced. The Everblades were 3 for 5 on the power play while the Checkers were 0 for 5.
The Everblades remain home on Saturday night and take on the Charlotte Checkers at 7:30 PM.
