Gulls - Condors Game Preview
November 14, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. â The San Diego Gulls look to end a three-game losing streak when they face off against the Bakersfield Condors tonight at Centennial Garden.
San Diego lost to the Florida Everblades on Saturday before being swept in a two-game set against the Alaska Aces. The Gulls have been outscored 14-3 during their skid. They've allowed five power-play goals on 25 chances while scoring twice with 26 man advantages.
The latest setback came in a 3-0 shutout Wednesday in Anchorage, Alaska. San Diego only fell shorthanded three times, while out-shooting the Aces 30-21, but couldn't get anything past Dan Murphy. The Alaska netminder went on to stop all 30 shots, while his teammates scored two in the second period and added an empty-netter in the third.
The Gulls remain tied with Long Beach for last place in the Pacific Division, both 13 points behind the front-running Las Vegas Wranglers. San Diego closes out its four-game trip tomorrow in Long Beach.
Bakersfield will be looking to sweep its three-game homestand with a win tonight over the Blue and Orange. The Condors beat Alaska Saturday before shutting out Florida on Sunday. They enter the day fifth in the Pacific Division with nine points, two ahead of the Gulls.
Last season the Condors relied on goaltending and so far it's no different this year. Joe Watkins enters the day with a 2-3-0 record, but a 2.00 goals-against average and .915 save percentage. Peter Hirsch is also 2-3-0, with a 2.64 GAA and .902 save percentage. Hirsch was in net for Bakersfield's 1-0 shutout of the Everblades Sunday, turning aside all 26 shots.
Offensively, it's been a struggle though. Bakersfield averages less than two goals a game, last in the ECHL. Its power play has been abysmal thus far, clicking at a league worst 4.1 percent.
Teams have split the first two meetings of the year and will clash seven more times this season. Bakersfield is 3-3-0 at home while the Gulls are 1-3-1 on the road. San Diego leads the all-time series with a 77-16-5 mark.
