Gulls Announce 'Firestorm On Ice'

November 14, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Gulls and San Diego Fire Department have organized "Firestorm On Ice," a celebrity hockey game to benefit the county's wildfire victims. The charity game will take place Saturday, Nov. 22 at the San Diego Ice Arena.

The game will feature Gulls alumni playing against the San Diego Fire Rescue Department team. Proceeds from the event will go to the victims of the recent San Diego fires, including the family of Steven Rucker, the Novato firefighter who gave his life fighting the Cedar fire.

Fans have the chance to see three decades of legendary Gulls alumni on the ice at the same time. Steve Martinson, Martin St. Amour, Stephane St. Amour, Brad Belland, Sandy Fitzpatrick, Jamie Black, Joe Norris, Dean Tiltgen and others will go head-to-head with your heroic San Diego Fire Rescue team, coached by B.J. MacPherson, 14-year NHLer and former Los Angeles King Eddie Joyal and hall-of-famer Willie O'Ree.

Officiating the game will be the ultimate peacekeepers-and equal heroes of the fires – the San Diego Police Department. The San Diego Firefighter's Pipe Band and Color Guard, Gulls Girls and other special guests will also be on hand.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under. Seating is limited so be sure to arrive early. San Diego Ice Arena is located at 11048 Ice Skate Place, off Mira Mesa Blvd, west of I-15.

The Gulls have already raised almost $10,000 for the wildfire victims through their "Ice Down The Fire" T-shirts and "Saves For San Diego" programs.

"Ice Down The Fire" T-shirts were given to anyone donating $10 or more at a Gulls home game. Some 730 shirts have been given away so far, raising $7,300. This fundraiser will continue as long as supplies last. You can get your shirt at any Gulls home game or at the "Firestorm on Ice" charity game. Fans can also mail in a $10 donation to the address listed below and a T-shirt will be sent back the next business day.

The "Saves for San Diego" campaign added $2,025, bringing the grand total raised to $9,325. For every save made by a San Diego goaltender at the Nov. 1, Nov. 7 and Nov. 8 game, $25 was donated to the American Red Cross. Gulls goaltenders combined for 81 saves during that three-game span.
