Generals induct Carter into Hall of Fame

November 14, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greensboro Generals News Release

GREENSBORO—The Greensboro Generals will induct original franchise member Don Carter into their Hall of Fame in a ceremony during their November 15th game against the Columbia Inferno. The induction of Carter, and the retiring of his No. 14 jersey, will mark just the second time in franchise history a player has received such honors. On March 9, 2002, Pat Kelly was announced as the inaugural member of the Generals Hall of Fame and his No. 5 jersey was retired.

Carter, a defenseman, began his career in 1955-56 when he appeared in three games with the Buffalo Bison of the AHL. Over the next three seasons he would spend time with the Calgary Stampeders and again with the Bison (1956-57); Trois-Rivieres Lions (1957-58); and Troy Bruins, Vancouver Canucks (1958-59). Then in 1959-60, with the introduction of hockey to Greensboro, Carter became a member of the inaugural Greensboro Generals franchise. He would spend the next nine seasons in a Generals uniform, departing in 1968-69 to play for the Denver Spurs of the WHL. Returning to Greensboro in the 1970-71 season, Carter would play in Greensboro in 1971-72, and appear in one game for the 1972-73 season. He would spend parts of the next two seasons in Winston-Salem and Philadelphia, and retire following a 20-year career with 364 goals scored, 649 assists, 1,013 points in 867 games played.

Speaking from his home in Toronto, Canada, Carter recalled memories of his playing days stating that the "most important as a player is that we had the best rink in the league. The teams from the Northern Division enjoyed coming down to play against us. I always enjoyed the fans, and they enjoyed my style of play, so I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Greensboro. While we only won one championship (1963), and while we only won the one, we should have won at least four providing the team we had."

In addition to Carter's induction ceremony, "Anniversary Night" will also feature appearances from a host of former Monarchs and Generals players including (years with Generals/Monarchs): Harvard Turnbull (1962-64, 1966-67), John Voss (1966-68, 1975-76), Stu Roberts (1967-71, 1971-76), Bill Young (1967-70), Ron Hindson (1971-75), Bob Wright (1973-76), Cam Colborne (1974-77), Phil Berger (1989-91, 1992-93, 1994-95, 1999-00), Jamie Nicolls (1989-90, 1992-94), Darryl Noren (1990-1995), EJ Sauer (1989-90), Bill Horn (1992-93, 1994-95) and Dean Zayonce (1991-95, 1996-97, 1999-00).
