Blades Cough up Lead, Fall 2-1 to Cyclones
January 7, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (21-16-1) allowed a pair of third period goals to Cincinnati (13-13-7), giving the Cyclones a come-from-behind 2-1 win on Friday night at Germain Arena.
The game began in strong fashion for the Everblades who tallied early in the first period to grab the lead. Off a blocked Cincinnati shot, Francis Lemieux raced ahead through the neutral zone on a 2-on-1 with Matt Beca. After delaying slightly once in the zone, Lemieux fired a pass from the top of the left circle to Beca at the right side of the crease where he deflected the puck under the cross bar just three minutes into the game for his seventh goal of the season.
That goal held up until the early stages of the third period, in large part because of the goaltending of Everblades net-minder Jaroslav Janus. The Cyclones at times dominated the offensive pressure out-shooting Florida 15-7 in the first period and 13-7 in the second period, but Janus came up big to keep Florida in the lead.
As the third period began however, the Cyclones grabbed control of the game. Just 15 seconds into the final period Cincinnati swooped into the Everblades zone, stole the puck and saw Scott Reynolds get a shot away from the slot that a sprawling Janus stopped, but the rebound kicked to the bottom of the left circle where Barrett Ehgoetz lifted into the net for his seventh goal of the season.
The contest remained tied until the late stages of the frame when the Cyclones broke through with the eventual game-winner. Cincinnati took advantage of a loose puck in the neutral zone as Ehgoetz poked the puck ahead on the right side for Christiaan Minella who let a wrist shot go from the right circle that squeezed between the pads of Janus at the 16:56 mark.
Cincinnati goaltender Chet Pickard settled in after allowing the early goal to stop 18 of 19 shots and preserve the win, which improved his record to 2-6-2.
Janus suffered the tough-luck loss which dropped his record to 8-8-0 after turning away 40 of 42 shots.
On the power play, both teams finished off the game 0-of-4.
