West Virginia Black Bears News Release
The West Virginia Black Bears dropped the series finale to the State College Spikes 2-1 on Saturday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. With the loss, West Virginia falls to an overall record of 24-24 this season while State College improves to 23-24.
The Black Bears got on the board first in the second inning when 1B Chris Harvey got things rolling with a one out single to right. C Christian Kelley then delivered a single, advancing Harvey to second. With two outs, SS Kevin Newman reached on a fielding error, scoring Harvey from second to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when State College answered back. With runners on second and third, the Spikes crossed a run on a grounder to third to tie the game 1-1.
The game was sent into extras after neither team scored through nine innings. In the tenth, State College took a 2-1 lead on a double to left by Thomas Spitz. The Black Bears got a one-out single from RF Logan Hill and was then bunted over to second but he was left stranded as the Spikes retired the next two batters to win the game.
West Virginia had 9 hits on the night but only had one player finish with multiple hits. CF Casey Hughston finished the night going 2-for-5 with a stolen base. SP Luis Paula pitched 5.0 innings, allowing only one run with strikeouts but was given a no-decision. RP Nick Hibbing pitched 2.2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing the go-ahead run in the tenth and was saddled with the loss (1-1). State College reliever Jery Then earned the win (1-2) after tossing 2.0 scoreless innings.
The Black Bears will now head on the road to face the Willliamsport Crosscutters for a three-game series at Bowman Field. The series will begin on Sunday, August 9 with a schedule first pitch of 5:05 p.m.
