Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, NY - The New York-Penn League officially announced the rosters on Saturday, for the 2015 New York-Penn League All-Star Game, and four ValleyCats will represent the North Team. Third baseman Bobby Wernes, first baseman Dexture McCall, outfielder Pat Porter, and left-handed pitcher Alex Winkelman, all received the honor. This year's All-Star Game will take place at Ripken Stadium, in Aberdeen, Maryland, on Tuesday, August 18.
Bobby Wernes, a 2015 30th round draft pick by the Houston Astros out of the University of Arkansas, leads the ValleyCats in batting average (.333), on-base percentage (.420), and multi-hit games (13), while adding 13 runs batted in, and 13 walks. The Overland Park, Kansas native was recently recognized by the Astros Player Development Department as Tri-City's Hitter of the Month, for the month of July.
McCall, selected by the Astros in the 31st round in 2014, is batting .270, with two home runs and 19 runs batted in, which is tied for the most among all ValleyCats. The Tampa, Florida native has also had two separate walk-off, game-winning hits so far this season.
Porter, a 15th round selection this year out of Ohio State University, is hitting .263, while leading Tri-City with 11 doubles, three triples, and 15 extra-base hits. The Chagrin Falls, Ohio native just completed a 13-game hit streak, that saw him hit .378 (17-for-45), with five doubles, two triples, and three runs batted in, from July 21 to August 3.
Winkelman, who was selected by Houston in the 21st round this season out of Southeast Missouri State, joined the 'Cats on July 10, after beginning the 2015 professional campaign with the Greeneville Astros in the Rookie-Level Appalachian League. While with the Tri-City, he has posted a 4-0 record, with a 1.45 earned run average, and 23 strikeouts to only four walks in 18.2 innings over five game (two starts). Like Wernes, Winkelman also earned monthly accolades, as the native of Crystal City, Missouri was recognized by the Astros Player Development Department as the ValleyCats July Pitcher of the Month.
The North Team is comprised of players from Auburn, Batavia, Connecticut, Hudson Valley, Lowell, Tri-City, and Vermont; and the South Team is comprised of players from Aberdeen, Brooklyn, Mahoning Valley, State College, Staten Island, West Virginia and Williamsport.
The Tri-City ValleyCats are currently in Aberdeen, Maryland, wrapping up a three-game series against the IronBirds at the Ripken Stadium, the home of the 2015 New York-Penn League All-Star Game. Following the game, the 'Cats will return to Joseph L. Bruno Stadium for a six-game homestand beginning on Sunday, August 8, with a 5 p.m. game against the Lowell Spinners.
