Direwolves Route Renegades in Front of Record Crowd, 10-1

The Staten Island Direwolves (25-21) routed the Hudson Valley Renegades (22-25) on Meet George R.R. Martin Night by a score of 10-1 in front of a new record crowd of 7,529.
The Renegades got on the board first in the top of the first inning. Hector Montes hit a one-out double and left fielder Joe McCarthy drove him in with a single. That was McCarthy's 11th RBI on the season.
Staten Island tied the game at one in the bottom of the fourth. Kevin Cornelius led off the inning with a single and scored when Brandon Wagner hit a line drive double to right field.
The Direwolves would take the lead for good in the fifth inning. Jeff Hendrix reached on an error, Kyle Holder and Thairo Estrada singled to load the bases for Jhalan Jackson. Jackson proceeded to hit a bases clearing double. To top off the rally, Wagner hit a two-run homer. The Yankees scored a total of five runs in the inning.
The Direwolves added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Drew Bridges led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a throwing error, and moved to third base on a wild pitch. After Jake Hernandez walked, Hendrix hit an RBI groundout to shortstop for a six-run lead.
For the fourth inning in a row the Direwolves would score a run. Estrada led off the bottom of the six with a single and moved to second on Cornelius' second hit of the evening. Jackson brought both home with a two-RBI triple to centerfield. Jackson finished with five RBI's on the night. He would score the tenth and final Yankee run of the game on a wild pitch.
Direwolves starting pitcher Ethan Carnes went 2.2 innings, giving up three hits, one run, no walks, and struck out four. Jonny Drozd (W, 1-2) relieved Carnes and went 3.1 innings of shutout ball, striking out two. Jose Mesa (S, 1) picked up his first save of the season by pitching a scoreless three innings, striking out five.
The Direwolves will start a three game series in Staten Island with the Brooklyn Cyclones on Sunday Aug. 9th at 4 p.m. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
