Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
LOWELL, MA-The Connecticut Tigers (23-23) dropped the final game against the Lowell Spinners (25-23) on Saturday evening by a final score of 3-2. Centerfielder Luis Alexander Basabe delivered a bases loaded two RBI base hit to walk the Spinners off.
Connecticut took the lead 2-1 in the top of the ninth on a solo home run by third basemen Josh Lester (1-4) off Lowell pitcher Bobby Poyner (1-1). For Lester it was his second home run of the season.
Lowell responded in the bottom half of the inning. With Gerson Moreno (2-5) on the mound in his third inning of work the leadoff batter first basemen Josh Ockimey (1-4) singled and was pinch run for by Aneudis Peralta. The next batter was third basemen Mitch Gunsolus and he reached on an error that allowed runners to move to second and third. After a walk to load the bases with no outs pinch hitter Kyri Washington grounded to third and Lester threw home to cut down the run and keep Connecticut in the lead.
However, the next batter was Basabe (2-4, 2 RBI, 2B) and after falling behind in the count 0-2 he was able to ground a 2-2 pitch into right fielder for the game winning hit. It was the first time a team has walked off against Connecticut this year.
Lowell scored first in the third inning on a RBI single by shortstop Jeremy Rivera (1-3, RBI). The Tigers evened the score at 1-1 when leftfielder Jacob Kapstein produced an RBI groundout in the fifth.
Sandy Baez started the game for the Tigers and went the first six innings allowing just a single run on five hits. He struck out five, walked one and hit two batters. Moreno who took the lose went the final two and a third innings and allowed two hits and two runs while striking out three and walking two.
Kevin Steen started the game for Lowell and scattered two hits in six innings of work. He struck out five and walked three.
Connecticut will play the first game of the three game series at home against Auburn on Sunday. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
