Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
Trying the avoid their second sweep on their home field this season, the Scrappers (22-24) shut out the Muckdogs (19-27) for the second time this season with a 4-0 win.
The star of the game was Jared Robinson (1-3). Robinson went a season-high seven innings, allowing five hits, no runs, no walks, and striking out seven. Robinson gave the ball to Dominic DeMasi for the eighth and ninth, and DeMasi allowed one hit while striking out three in his two innings of work.
The key for the Scrappers in the last three to four weeks has been scoring early. Mahoning Valley is 14-6 when it scores first, and it scored two in the bottom of the first.
Mark Mathias started things with a walk. He scored on an RBI double for Daniel Salters, who then later scored on a wild pitch by Jordan Holloway (3-4).
Mahoning Valley added another run in the bottom of the fifth. Ka'ai Tom hit a double to left to score Willi Castro. Castro extended his hit streak to seven games on Saturday night.
Just for insurance, the Scrappers tacked on another in the bottom of the sixth. Nate Winfrey scored on an RBI single for Silento Sayles.
The Scrappers finish their homestand 3-3, and head out on the road for a quick three-game series with State College. The Spikes are 10-13 at home, while the Scrappers are 13-10 on the road. State College is one-half of a game ahead of the Scrappers in the Pinckney Division, and own the same lead in the wild card. First pitch on Sunday is set for 6:05. Jorge Rodriguez goes for the Spikes against Kieran Lovegrove for Mahoning Valley.
