GRANVILLE, WV - Thomas Spitz doubled in the eventual winning run in the tenth inning for the second time in three nights, and the State College Spikes clinched their third straight series win over the West Virginia Black Bears with a 2-1 victory on Saturday night at Monongalia County Ballpark.
Spitz, whose two-base hit came with two outs in the tenth on Thursday night in the Spikes' (23-24) 7-6 win over the Black Bears (24-24), doubled with no outs on Saturday to bring in Champ Rowland. Rowland had produced his first State College hit, a leadoff single, to lead off the frame.
The Spikes trailed 1-0 in the fifth when Jhohan Acevedo singled and moved to third on R.J. Dennard's ground-rule double. Rowland then knocked in Acevedo with a groundout to tie the game until it hit extra innings.
Jacob Evans went four innings and allowed just one unearned run on four hits in his first professional start for State College. Evans also struck out two batters in the effort. Luke Harrison then threw three scoreless innings of relief, striking out four batters and yielding two hits and a walk.
