Auburn Doubledays Game Notes

August 8, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Auburn Doubledays News Release

Tonight's Game: It's the series finale between the Doubledays and Crosscutters as Auburn looks to avoid dropping to 0-6 against Williamsport to start the 2015 season. Taylor Guilbeau gets the start for the 'Days against Luke Leftwich for the Cutters.

Last Night's Game: Williamsport took game two of the series 7-3 over Auburn last night. The Doubledays went up 1-0 in the bottom of the third, but never had another lead as the Crosscutters took the lead 2-1 in the fourth. Auburn had a couple big situations, but couldn't retake the lead and the game.

Five in a Row: With last night's loss, the Doubledays series win streak ended at five. Auburn had taken two of three from Vermont, Lowell, Aberdeen, Hudson Valley, and West Virginia in that order. Since 2010, the Doubledays had never won more than three series in a row until this current stretch.

Bullpen Domination: Auburn's 'pen has been dominant over the course of the season recording a 2.69 ERA (68 ER in 227.1 IP). The starting pitchers haven't been as fortunate recording a 5.28 ERA (108 ER in 184.0 IP). Also of note, the Doubledays have surrendered 106 runs in the first three innings combined (36, 33, and 37 in the first through third respectively). Those 106 runs account for exactly 48% of the runs Auburn's pitching staff has given up this year (219 total).

Regressing to the Mean: When the Doubledays visited the Crosscutters on July 1st, Williamsport sat at 10-1 on the season. After the series sweep, the Crosscutters were 13-1 in 2015. But since that hot start, Williamsport hasn't been the same. Since the sweep, the Crosscutters are 16-17 overall while the Doubledays are 16-16.

The Wild Card Chase: With 30 games left in the season, the Doubledays sit 1.5 games back in the wild card race. Lowell, Connecticut, and West Virginia are all currently tied for the wild card spot. Brooklyn is half a game back while Aberdeen, Auburn, Hudson Valley, and State College all sit 1.5 games back.

Scouting Williamsport: Austin Bossart extended his hit streak to 14 games and on- base streak to 18 last night with a single in the second. Bossart's hit streak is the longest active streak in the New York-Penn League and dates back to July 6th. His on- base streak is tied with Mark Mathias of Mahoning Valley for the second longest active on-base streak behind Victor Padron's 31 with Connecticut. The Doubledays' longest hit and on-base streaks this season both belong to Andrew Stevenson who is now with Hagerstown. The outfielder hit in 13 straight while reaching base in 15 in a row.

The Unfriendly Confines: The Doubledays are 8-15 at home this year, which is the worst winning percentage at home for any team in the league of .348. Mahoning Valley is 8-14 and has the second worst winning percentage of .364. On the flip side, Auburn has one of the between winning percentages on the road of .609 thanks to a 14-9 road record. That win percentage on the road is second best in the league behind Connecticut's .636 due to a 14-8 road record.
