Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Staten Island, NY - The Hudson Valley Renegades were defeated by the Staten Island Yankees on Saturday evening by a score of 10-1 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
The Renegades scored the games first run in the top of the first inning as third baseman Hector Montes hit a double into the left field corner and scored on left fielder Joe McCarthy's RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.
Starting pitcher Cameron Varga (1-4) was helped out by his defense on a few occasions in the first three innings. Right fielder Cade Gotta threw out a runner trying to score in the first inning on a single from second baseman Thairo Estrada. In the second inning, Gotta came up big again as he took away a hit from left fielder Zack Zehner on a diving grab. Then in the bottom of the third inning with a runner on third base and one out, second baseman Oscar Sanay made a diving stop to his left off a ball hit by Yankees shortstop Kyle Holder and kept the Renegades lead at 1-0.
The Yankees tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning on designated hitters Brandon Wagner's RBI double. And Staten Island added five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a three-run double from right fielder Jhalan Jackson and a two-run home run from Wagner.
That ended the day for Varga as he took the loss allowing six runs and one earned run in four and two-thirds innings.
Staten Island picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a RBI fielder's choice from center fielder Jeff Hendrix. That lead grew to 10-1 in the bottom of the second as Jackson drove in two runs on a triple and scored later in the inning on a wild pitch
Jonny Drozd (1-2) earned the win in relief for Staten Island as he allowed two hits and no runs in three and a third innings pitched. Jose Mesa pitched the final three innings for the Yankees and picked up his first save of the season.
With the result, the Renegades fell to 22-25 while the Yankees improved their record to 25-21.
