BURLINGTON, VT (August 8, 2015) --The Cyclones (23-24) suffered a sweep on the road at the hands of the Vermont Lake Monsters after losing Saturday's game by a 6-2 score. LHP Kevin Canelon (4-3, 4.20) turned in a quality start but ended up the loser after the Cyclones grabbed the lead but eventually let it go as the game wore on. The loss drops Tom Gamboa's squad under .500 for the first time all season and extends its current losing streak to five.

Brooklyn jumped out in front during the top half of the second after a David Thompson single and a ground ball fielder's choice from Brandon Brosher began the inning. First baseman Zach Mathieu then singled, moving Brosher to third. With two out, Oswald Caraballo notched his first extra base hit of the season, knocking a double into center field and scoring both runners. Caraballo's second and third RBIs of the season gave the Cyclones a 2-0 lead.

It would take until the next inning for Vermont to get on the board versus Canelon. After hitting a double, Ryan Howell moved over to third on a ground out. A two-out infield single from Richie Martin scored Howell and cut the Brooklyn lead in half.

After surrendering two runs on three hits in the second, Vermont starter Angel Duno sharpened up, retiring ten straight Cyclones to finish his night. In his Lake Monster debut, Duno allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out one and walking none.

Canelon retired the leadoff batter in each of his six innings and kept himself out of serious trouble early but during the fifth that tide would begin to turn. A one-out single from Skye Bolt and back to back walks loaded the bases. Pinch-hitter Jesus Lopez grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Bolt and knotting the game at two. Canelon escaped the inning without further damage but in the sixth got two outs before letting the go-ahead run score. After an infield hit by Brett Siddler, a stolen base put him in scoring position. Steven Pallares promptly singled, scoring Siddall and giving Vermont a 3-2 lead. Canelon finished the inning and exited the game after six innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six.

The Lake Monsters would add three unearned runs in the seventh when RHP Corey Taylor came on in relief of the lefty. Following a leadoff single to Howell, Taylor attempted a double play on a comebacker but was charged with a throwing error that left runners on first and second. A ground out put the runners at second and third before an intentional walk loaded the bases yet again. Chris Iriart grounded out to third but another run crossed, giving Vermont a two-run lead. With runners on second and third, catcher Seong-min Kim singled to drive in two and stretch the lead to 6-2.

Derek Beasley (3-1) would get the win after taking over in the sixth. However, the Cyclones had an opportunity to score in the eighth when each of the first two batters reached base. After a Branden Kaupe walk and a Tucker Tharp single, Vinny Siena hit a sacrifice fly, moving Kaupe to third with one out. With runners at the corners, Michael Bernal struck out before Thompson flew out, ending the threat and securing Beasley three scoreless innings of relief.

Closer Alex Palsha came on for Brooklyn in the eighth in a non-save situation but retired the Lake Monsters in order, extending his scoreless streak to 17.2 innings to begin the season. Vermont closer James Naile also came on without a chance to record a save but still finished the game with a perfect ninth inning, giving the Lake Monsters a 6-2 win.

Next up, the Cyclones travel to Staten Island to take on the Yankees in two games at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. This round of the Battle of the Boroughs begins on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 PM and Tyler Badamo (2-5, 3.10) on the hill for Brooklyn. The Cyclones return home to MCU Park on Tuesday, August 11th for the third and final game of the series with the division-rival Staten Island Yankees. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
