Bisons Sweep RailRiders Again, Win Seventh Straight
September 5, 2021 - International League (IL)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
Statement made.
For the second time in five days, the Bisons swept a doubleheader against the RailRiders, winning 8-4 and 6-1 on Saturday night from PNC Field. The pair of victories give the Herd seven straight in the win column, six of which have come against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
In less than a week, the Bisons have flipped a two-game deficit into a four-game lead over the RailRiders atop the Northeast division. Buffalo (63-41) now trails Durham by only four games for the best record in all of Triple-A East.
In what has been a closely fought series, the Bisons provided again to be too much for the RailRiders in the moments that count. Facing a deficit for the first time since last week, the Bisons rallied for four runs in the sixth inning to win Saturday's opening game comfortably. The Herd then left no doubt in a 6-2 win in the nightcap.
In game one, the Bisons got a leadoff home run from Otto Lopez on just the second pitch of the evening, but found themselves trailing 2-1 heading into the fourth inning. RailRiders starter J.P. Sears had retired seven in a row, but issued a leadoff walk to Tyler White before facing Cullen Large with one out. The Bisons infielder fouled off an amazing 10 two-strike pitches before earning a 16-pitch free pass to first base.
There's no doubt the at-bat took a toll on Sears, who then left a pitch over the heart of the plate to the next batter, Nash Knight, and the slugging switch-hitter belted a no-doubt three-run homer to left field.
After the RailRiders tied game one at four thanks to a Trey Amburgey home run in the fifth, the Bisons went to work in the sixth. Again it was Large who set the table with a lead off single that skipped off the mound and bounced over the second baseman's head and into centerfield. Knight walked and Logan Warmoth singled to load the bases for Rodrigo Lopez's game-winning sacrifice fly.
The Bisons would score three more times, thanks to Reggie Pruitt's RBI-single in just his second start with the team as well as a run-scoring wild pitch and a second sac fly from Christian Colon.
The big rally made a winner of Thomas Hatch, who improved to 2-5 on the season with six strikeouts over five innings. Anthony Castro followed the Bisons four-run sixth by striking out all three batters he faced in the bottom of the frame for the perfect shutdown inning.
In the seventh, Amburgey lined into a game-ending doubleplay as Knight snagged his line drive and third base and threw across the diamond to double up a runner for the final out.
The Bisons kept the momentum going into the nightcap, continuing their stretch of scoring first in every game of the series. Former RailRider catcher destroyed a two-run home run to right off Yankees prospect, Deivi Garcia.
The Herd then capitalized off a number of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre miscues to build an insurmountable lead. With two outs in the third, Richard Urena doubled home White to give Buffalo a 3-0 cushion. He then scored when RailRiders centerfielder Estevan Florial and leftfielder Greg Allen let a flyball off the bat of Christian Colon drop in between them.
Colon would later score thanks to a pair of wild pitches from Garcia.
The Herd's sixth and final run of the night came without a base hit as Warmoth walked to lead off the fourth and came around on a couple of groundouts and a passed ball.
The win for Buffalo went to Jacob Waguespack, who improved to 7-2 thanks to an inning of scoreless relief after spot starter Kyle Johnston worked the first two frames. For Waguespack, the outing was his first since August 10 because of injury.
Ryan Borucki, Rafael Dolis, Curtis Taylor and Hobie Harris also all pitched an inning in the game two win. Dolis struck out a pair in his 1-2-3 frame and Taylor also retired all three batters he faced.
The Bisons will now go for the rare seven-game sweep with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch against the RailRiders on Sunday.
