 St. Paul Saints News Release
COLUMBUS, OH - If the old adage is true, "it's not how you start, it's how you finish" then the St. Paul Saints are sitting pretty. They ended a nightmarish 12 game roadtrip with a much needed 1-0 victory over the Columbus Clippers in game two of a doubleheader on Sunday night at Huntington Park. They were led by starter Charlie Barnes who was magnificent in his 5.0 plus innings of work.
In the bottom of the first, Barnes walked the leadoff man Steven Kwan. After a fielder's choice, Barnes gave up a single to Gabrial Arias to put runners at first and second. That was the last baserunner allowed by Barnes, who proceeded to retire 14 in a row, until the sixth.
The Saints scored the only run of the game in the second inning when BJ Boyd led off with a walk. With one out Boyd stole second and scored on an RBI single by Drew Maggi.
In the sixth, Barnes allowed an infield single to Alex Call, the last batter Barnes would face. Nick Vincent came on in relief and gave up a single to Kwan putting runners at first and second. Vincent then fanned the next two hitters, but a passed ball moved the runners to second and third. After a walk to Oscar Gonzalez loaded the bases, Vincent fanned Andruw Monasterio to end the inning. Barnes went 5.0+ shutout innings allowing two hits while walking one and striking out three.
Edgar Garcia pitched a perfect seventh to pick up the save.
Jose Miranda finished the night 0-3 and had his 14-game hitting streak snapped, tying him for the longest hitting streak by a Saints player this season.
The Saints have Monday off and return to action on Tuesday night against the Omaha Storm Chasers at 7:05 p.m. at CHS Field. Both teams are TBA. The game can be seen on the Saints Broadcast Network, cable access channels in and around the Twin Cities, and MiLB.TV, and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
