Baysox Rediscover Winning Ways against Akron
July 8, 2015 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Bowie, Md. - The Baysox were able to snap a three game losing streak as they beat Akron 3-2 in the second game of the series Wednesday night. The pitching staff bounced back after a 10-0 loss Tuesday with a strong performance led by Terry Doyle (9-1, 2.16) who picked up his league leading ninth win of the season.
For the second night in a row, Akron jumped out to get the lead first. Carlos Moncrief hit a soft single to left field, stole second base and was moved to third on a single from Jordan Smith. Bryson Myles then grounded out, which was enough to bring Moncrief home and give the RubberDucks a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The run was just the second allowed by Doyle in 19 innings pitched.
The Baysox offense came back to life in the bottom of the second inning against Akron starter Shawn Morimando. Brandon Snyder tied the game with a solo home run to lead-off the inning. Mike Yastrzemski then got a base hit for the third night in a row on a line drive to right field and was brought home on a long double from Garabez Rosa to give the Baysox a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Akron's Yandy Diaz led off with a single and was plated on a double from Moncrief to tie the game 2-2.
The Baysox bounced back once again in the bottom of the sixth. Trey Mancini and Snyder hit back-to-back singles for their second hits of the night. David Freitas then hit into a fielder's choice to move Mancini to third and force Snyder out at second. Yastrzemski followed with a sacrifice fly to right field and Mancini was able to score on a close play at the plate and give the Baysox their final run of the game and put them up 3-2. Akron's Manager, Dave Wallace, disagreed with home plate umpire Jeremie Rehak on the call and was ejected from the game.
Doyle made one of his shortest starts of the season, throwing six innings and giving up two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out seven, but still managed to pick up the win thanks to a solid performance from the bullpen. Newly acquired Richard Rodriguez (0-0, 1.42) threw two perfect innings, and Andrew Triggs (0-2, 0.27) picked up his eighth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Baysox look to take the series tomorrow morning in a day game at 11:05 a.m. against Akron with Elih Villanueva (7-5, 2.56) on the mound.
