Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets left a dozen runners in their 3-2 loss to the New Britain Rock Cats Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton went 2-for-11 with men in scoring position, losing their 16th one-run game of the season. Gavin Cecchini posted his second straight three-hit game and extended his hitting streak to eight games.
Binghamton's only runs came early in Shane Carle's outing. Cecchini and LJ Mazzilli began the night with back-to-back doubles, the latter bringing in the first run of the game. After Carle walked two to load the bases with two outs, Josh Rodriguez rolled a groundball up the third base line that hugged the chalk for an RBI single. Binghamton stranded the bases loaded in the frame, but had an early 2-0 lead.
After facing the minimum through the first two innings, Gabriel Ynoa began the third by surrendering back-to-back singles to Charley Thurber and Zach Osborne. After being sacrificed into scoring position by Carle, Joey Wong got New Britain on the board with an RBI single to left. With men on the corners, Wong broke for second on a dirt ball, intentionally inducing a rundown. While he was tagged out by Brock Peterson in-between first and second base, Osborne came down to score from third, beating Peterson's throw to the plate.
New Britain took their first lead of the series in the sixth inning, when Juan Ciriaco doubled to left with one out. The next batter, Mike Tauchman, drove him home with a single to center. Ynoa would retire the final seven batters he faced.
Binghamton had ample scoring opportunities, leaving the bases loaded in the first, and stranding two on base in three other frames. With two outs in the seventh inning and Brandon Nimmo at first, Rodriguez hit a potential game-tying double to right. Nimmo rounded third too far, attempting to slam on the brakes too late, and was tagged out in a rundown between third and home.
Binghamton put two on in the eighth, before reliever Carlos Estevez came on to fan Mazzilli to end the threat. Estevez then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to shut the door.
Ynoa (5-6) took the loss, allowing three runs and seven hits in eight innings. Carle (9-5) earned his league-leading ninth win, allowing two runs and seven hits in six innings. Estevez notched his second save, retiring all four batters he faced, while striking out three.
The B-Mets (42-42) wrap up their series with the New Britain Rock Cats Thursday afternoon at 1:05 PM. RHP Michael Fulmer gets the ball against RHP Matt Flemer. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 12:50 PM on ESPN radio 1360 WYOS and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
POSTGAME NOTES: Ynoa has pitched eight or more innings in three consecutive starts for the first time in his career...Binghamton is 17-16 in one-run games this season...It was New Britain's first win vs. Binghamton since August 28, 2014...Gavin Cecchini is 8-for-14 in his last three games.
