RubberDucks Fall in Controversial Manner
July 8, 2015 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
A sacrifice fly by Bowie's Mike Yastrzemski drove in a controversial, go-ahead run in the sixth inning Wednesday night, and the Baysox bullpen made it stand up in a 3-2 win over the Akron RubberDucks at Prince George's Stadium.
Turning Point
With the score tied, 2-2, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Trey Mancini and Brandon Snyder led off with back-to-back singles for the Baysox. The next hitter, David Freitas, hit a potential double-play grounder to second baseman Todd Hankins. When Hankins flipped the ball to second, shortstop Ryan Rohlinger stumbled coming across the bag, and only retired Snyder, instead of getting two. Mancini advanced to third. Yastrzemski lifted a shallow fly ball to right fielder Carlos Moncrief, who fired an accurate, one-bounce throw to the plate as Mancini tried to tag and score. Catcher Jake Lowery applied the tag as Mancini came in with a feet-first slide. Home plate umpire Jeremy Rehak called Mancini safe, which gave Bowie a 3-2 lead. Akron manager David Wallace argued the call and was ejected from the game.
Mound Presence
Akron starter Shawn Morimando (5-9) worked 6 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. He walked only one and struck out four, but lost to the Baysox for the third time this year. Bowie starter Terry Doyle (9-1) pitched six strong innings and held the RubberDucks to two runs on five hits. Baysox reliever Rich Rodriguez followed Doyle and retired all six batters he faces, and closer Andrew Triggs worked around a two-out double in the ninth to earn his eighth save.
Duck Tales
Moncrief slugged an RBI double in the sixth inning to tie the game, 2-2. He finished 2-4 on the night, and also stole a base and scored a run. Jordan Smith was 2-3, with a pair of singles and a walk, and has six hits in the series. Righthander Casey Weathers turned in a perfect eighth inning in his second relief outing for Akron, touching 98-mph on the stadium radar gun.
Notes
The RubberDucks (44-42) are now 14-20 in one-run games...Time of game: 2:20 (:26 delay)...Attendance: 1,604.
