Milwaukee Admirals News Release
Milwaukee, WI - Mike Santorelli scored two goals and added an assist to carry the Milwaukee Admirals past the Grand Rapids Griffins 4-0 Friday night at the Bradley Center. Goaltender Pekka Rinne had 15 saves on the night, earning his third shutout of the season.
The first period proved to be a battle between defensive units as both teams were kept off the board. The Admirals had many close calls, including a shot that bounced behind Griffins netminder Jimmy Howard but was settled by Jakub Kindl allowing Howard time to pounce on the puck. Milwaukee's defense was on point as well, and the Griffins were unable to get a shot on goal for the first nine minutes of play.
The Admirals took the ice for the second frame with a man advantage for a penalty called on the Grifs at 19:50 of the first, and were awarded a 5-on-3 advantage only 37 seconds into the second after Kyle Quincey boarded Matt Ellison. Milwaukee capitalized on the two-man advantage and the Ads were on the board at 1:13 of the first. Center Mike Santorelli attempted to pass the puck but during a scramble and it was deflected into the Grand Rapids' net off of Griffins' center Ryan Oulahen.
About five minutes later, Antti Pihlstrom's speed got the best of the Griffins defense as he streaked around defenseman Tom Galvin and fired a shot on goal. Despite blocking the shot, Howard couldn't control the rebound and the puck landed in the slot setting up an easy goal for Santorelli, his second of the night. The rest of the period saw the Admirals fighting to keep the Griffins off the board. The penalty killing unit of Nolan Yonkman, Alexander Sulzer and Ellison helped to fend off a five-on-three opportunity for Grand Rapids.
Milwaukee entered the final 20 minutes of play a man down as Mark Matheson sat in the box to finish off his interference penalty called at 19:19 of the second. Despite the Griffins best effort, Milwaukee was unbeatable on the penalty kill. As play progressed, netminder Howard got quite the workout as the Ads controlled the puck in the offensive zone. At 17:13, Kelsey Wilson potted his sixth goal of the season increasing Milwaukee's lead to 3-0. Just a minute and a half later, Cody Franson lit the lamp, also for the sixth time, sealing the deal for the Admirals.
Along with his two goals, Santorelli assisted on Wilson's goal, bagging his first three-point game of this season. Defenseman Janne Niskala had two assists, the 6th time as an Admiral. Tonight's win increased the Admirals record versus the Griffins to 3-2.
The Admirals are on the road tomorrow facing off against the Peoria Rivermen before taking four days off for the all-star break. They return to the Bradley Center next Friday night to take on the Chicago Wolves at 7:00 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets by calling Ticketmaster at (414) 276-4545 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
