Rivermen shoot Stars 3-1
January 25, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release
Martin Kariya set up the first two Peoria goals and scored the third as the Rivermen downed the Iowa Stars by a 3-1 count on Friday night at the Wells Fargo Arena.
Peoria opened the scoring with a power play goal in the first period. Martin Kariya turned a Julian Talbot feed ahead to a streaking Charles Linglet as he beat the defense down the right wing with speed, cutting in front of the Iowa net before moving to the backhand and beating Tobias Stephan at 8:57.
Chris Connor's pretty individual effort in slipping past both defenders and wristing a shot over the shoulder of Chris Beckford-Tseu (15 saves) tied the game at one at the 5:41 mark of the middle frame.
The Rivermen responded on a Micki DuPont deflection off Jeff Woywitka's point shot at 14:52, directing the puck past Stephan for the eventual game winner.
With Iowa pressing for the tie in the second period, Beckford-Tseu made his best save of the night, robbing Connor with the right pad on a breakaway with under six minutes to go.
Kariya added the insurance goal on a two-on-one with Linglet late in the third period, taking a pass in the slot and firing the puck into the yawning goalmouth for the 3-1 final.
For Woywitka, the game marked his seventh straight road contest with a point, the longest such streak for a Rivermen player this year. Over that span he has scored four goals and totaled 10 points.
