Bears tossed

Adirondack Phantoms News Release

PHILADELPHIA - Kyle Greentree's third-round shootout goal ended up being the clincher as the Phantoms picked up a 4-3 shootout win on Friday night at the Wachovia Spectrum in front of a season-high 11,208 fans armed with teddy bears and other stuffed animals for the team's annual Teddy Bear Toss. The win expanded Philadelphia's East Division lead to eight points over three different teams.

Hershey initiated the scoring at 15:10 of the first period on the first of two goals by Scott Barney. He buried a rebound after a flurry of power play shots on Phantoms goaltender Brian Boucher, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead.

Denis Tolpeko also bagged a pair of goals on the evening, and his first triggered the onslaught of huggable plush madness. It came at 15:32 of the second period while on a power play on a shot that snuck through the legs of Frederic Cassivi, and tied the game at 1-1.

Greentree gave the Phantoms a 2-1 advantage just 2:17 into the third period. He took a cross-ice pass at the left wing near the Hershey blue line, cut to the high slot and sprinted ahead between two Bears defensemen. He would have drawn a penalty had he not lifted the puck over Cassivi's glove into the upper right corner.

But less than a minute later, Joe Motzko tied it on another power play tally. Chris Bourque took a slapshot from the left circle, and Motzko got a stick blade on the puck at 3:13.

It took just over three minutes for Tolpeko to give his club the one-goal lead once again on his second power-play goal of the evening. David Laliberte took a shot from the left circle that Cassivi stopped. It bounced off to the left to Greentree, who backhanded it back into the crease. Tolpeko ran into the bouncing puck with his stick and pushed it over the line at 6:15.

Barney's second came at 9:37 after he snuck behind the Phantoms defense and slammed home a back-door pass from Josef Boumedienne, tying the game at 3-3.

After a scoreless overtime, the teams went to the shootout and did their scoring early. Tolpeko scored in the first round, Motzko in the second and Greentree in the third.

Boucher took the win with 25 saves on 28 Hershey bids and four stops of five in the shootout, while Cassivi absorbed the loss despite stopping 38 of 41 Phantoms chances.

The Phantoms now hold a record of 29-15-1-1 for 60 points, giving them an eight-point lead over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Hershey and Albany. They'll play their final game of January and last before the All-Star break tomorrow night when they visit the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7:00 PM. It will be Philadelphia's 14th game in 23 days.

The Phantoms will return to the Wachovia Spectrum on Friday, Feb. 1 to host the Worcester Sharks at 7:05. Tickets are available at the Wachovia Complex box office, online at ComcastTIX.com or phantomshockey.com, or by phone at 1-800-298-4200.
