January 25, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release

Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Stars took on season ticket holders and fans in the Iowa Stars Face-Off Poker Tournament at Prairie Meadows Race track and Casino on Wednesday, January 23rd. The event drew 121 poker players to the Poker Room at Prairie Meadows where 11 Iowa Stars players sat down to try their hand at Texas Hold 'em.

Eleven happy fans went home with an Iowa Stars jersey Wednesday night, as none of the Iowa Stars players won the pot. One Stars player was at each of the eleven tables to begin the tournament wearing a jersey that was autographed by the whole team. The poker player to knock the Stars player out of the tournament was given the jersey off his back.

The winner of the tournament was finally announced at 2 AM on Thursday morning. Mr. Playle won the final table and grand prize over $4,000. Iowa Stars goaltender Tobias Stephan finished the tournament in the top ten at number nine. Stephan was knocked out around midnight.

At ten o'clock the remaining Stars players' jerseys were raffled off their backs to contestants who were no longer playing but were still around to watch the action.

The Prairie Rose Room was set aside on Wednesday evening for the Iowa Stars, season ticket holders, and the other poker players in the tournament. Several Iowa Stars players who did not play in the tournament were in attendance to meet and greet fans and as they were eliminated.

In the end, Stars fans and the Stars players had a great time, "We should do this again," said Stars defenseman Trevor Byrne, "Maybe do a blackjack tournament next time."

Ethan Graham was the first Iowa Star to be knocked out of the tournament, followed by Francis Wathier, his "teacher". Graham had never played Texas Hold 'Em until earlier that afternoon when Wathier had coached the young defenseman on the basics of hold 'em poker. "I signed up for the tournament because I thought it sounded like fun!" said Graham.

Up next for the Stars is Peoria. The Stars and Rivermen will face-off tonight at 7:07 PM at Wells Fargo Arena before the Stars head to Rockford to take on the Ice Hogs in a rematch of last weekends two game set.
